Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, the Tutor Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with parents, teachers, counselors, principals and other school district staff to assist Native American/Alaska Native (NA/AN) Alpine County students enrolled at the Woodfords Indian Education Center (WIEC) and in the Alpine County Unified School District, Douglas County School District, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District or other approved alternative education program(s) in obtaining academic success;

responsible for monthly student attendance reporting, supervision of WIEC tutors, collaboration between American Indian Education Center (AIEC) Program Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Coordinator, if applicable. Fosters academic and developmental growth in NA/AN students and is responsible for providing direct educational services, tutoring assistance, and advising to Native American students. Responsible for oversight of academic programming for the WIEC’s After-School Program and Summer Enrichment Program.

WIEC Tutoring Coordinator will monitor WIEC student academic performance and records; implement the WIEC Early Alert System for prevention of student failure; oversees the Portfolios for Student Growth Project; monitors students taking independent study online courses in the WIEC computer lab and provide direct tutoring services as necessary. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Works with groups of Native American/Alaska Native K-12 students with common educational needs and/or Individual Education Plans.
  • Coordinates information and meetings between WIEC staff and WIEC Director to ensure adherence to departmental policies and procedures and coordinates school district policies and procedures to make certain optimal communication between all parties.
  • Assists students and families in academic achievement through multi-faceted educational support, including positive re-enforcement, re-direction, and reward.
  • Assists students in achieving grade advancement with daily educational resources and works with students and their families to develop an educational plan to ensure optimal academic growth, and assists in coordination of educational student workshops.
  • Schedules monthly conferences with tutors during the school year with additional conferences scheduled as needed.
  • Maintains accurate, confidential attendance and academic records, including staff feedback reports, student progress reports, reports of developmental deficiencies, as well as written, confidential staff records.
  • Reports center enrolled NA/AN students lists to the WIEC Director.
  • Informs parents/guardians of educational options for completion of outstanding school work, credit recovery (9th-12th grades), testing and college planning.
  • Makes referrals to Social Services of children considered to be at a high risk due to an unsatisfactory home life or poor educational performance as a results of a serious problem.
  • Schedules and co-facilitates with Student Attendance Review Board (SARB), Washoe Tribe Truancy Department, and school district teachers and staff.
  • Assists in the coordination of annual Back to School Nights, Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Meetings, Student Portfolio Events, and assists in recognizing NA/AN Alpine County students’ achievements at the annual End of the Year Student Recognition Night.
  • Meets with appropriate individuals (i.e. teachers, parents, and other education staff) in the formulation of education plans for individual NA/AN K-12th students.
  • Provides leadership and supervision of NA/AN K-12th students during recreational, cultural, and/or enrichment activities.
  • Transports NA/AN K-12th grade students in Washoe Tribal vehicles for special field trips.
  • Informs WIEC Director of individual student progress.
  • Provides necessary information to parents to ensure and maintain interest in students’ academic performance.
