DESCRIPTION
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU/CCU) is responsible for evaluating critically ill patients and assisting physicians with comprehensive patient care. The RN plans, implements, and documents nursing care based on patient needs and clinical priorities while ensuring adherence to evidence-based nursing practices and professional care standards.
Responsibilities include performing patient assessments, identifying patient needs, and determining priorities for care through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The RN develops and coordinates individualized care plans based on ongoing assessments, physician diagnoses, and the functional health framework. The role involves performing therapeutic nursing interventions, managing patient care, and documenting all care activities according to established standards of practice and patient acuity levels.
The nurse provides patient-centered care while supporting innovations and evidence-based practices in care delivery. The RN is responsible for the management of high-acuity critical care patients, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, complex vasopressor therapy, sedation management, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
Required clinical competencies include experience with central lines, ventilators, ICU cardiac telemetry, arterial lines, chest tubes, and strong peripheral IV access. The RN must be competent in administering blood transfusions and performing procedures such as arterial blood gas collection, phlebotomy, bladder management, and straight catheterization.
Experience with CRRT, Swan-Ganz catheters, balloon pumps, and Impella devices is preferred.
Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ASN) required;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS, Telemetry, NIHSS, and CEU Contact Stroke (4 Hours) required. CCRN certification preferred.
Licensure: Active New Jersey State Registered Nurse license or Multi-State Compact RN license.
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of strong ICU or Medical ICU experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
