Job SummaryThe Assistant Store Manager helps maintain a clean, well‑organized store that delivers exceptional customer service. In the direction of the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager supervises employees, manages merchandise presentation, completes paperwork, and prepares deposits. The role also performs stocking, cashiering functions and other duties to maximize profitability and customer satisfaction while protecting company assets.
Responsibilities- Provide superior customer service leadership; greet and assist customers and operate the cash register and scanner.
- Open and close the store at least two days per week.
- Assist with scheduling, training, safety meetings and compliance with company policies.
- Manage merchandise: receive, unpack, stock, restock and rotate on shelves and displays.
- Control inventory by managing damages, markdowns, scanning, paperwork and facility controls.
- Implement planograms and present merchandise according to established practices.
- Maintain store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, cash control procedures, sign for refunds and overrides, count register tills and deposit money.
- Assume management duties in the Store Manager’s absence.
- High school diploma or equivalent (strongly preferred).
- One year of retail experience and six months of supervisory experience (preferred).
- Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Problem‑solving ability and versatility in handling varied situations.
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
- Proficient in basic mathematical calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
- Cash register operation and report generation.
- Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices.
- Cash handling procedures including cashier accountability and deposit control.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to bank for deposits.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling while stocking and unloading.
- Handling merchandise and equipment such as scanners, pricing guns, boxes, dollies, and six‑wheel carts.
- Frequent lifting up to 40 lbs (occasionally 55 lbs) and occasional climbing using a step ladder up to six feet.
- Fast‑paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to weather conditions.
- Travel to other Dollar General stores for bank deposits, management meetings, and support as needed.
