In this position the Histotech - II PRN performs routine and non‑routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. The role works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. This position requires the ability to fully understand all equipment, its maintenance, and their processes.
The successful candidate participates in continuing education and in‑service training sessions sponsored by the department.
- Perform routine histology including specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry.
- Maintain diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensure correct patient labeling. Correctly prepare special stains and solutions and routinely verify that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; print labels as appropriate.
- Record in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared daily and log appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoot minor equipment failures. Document remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
- Follow appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
- Adhere to laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
- Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
- Adhere to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certified.
- 3+ years' experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory.
- Demonstrated understanding of the equipment used daily, including microtome, stainer/cover slipper, and slide labeler.
- Ability to multi‑task and work in a fast‑paced, high‑volume deadline‑driven environment.
- Ability to thrive in a team and service‑oriented environment and maintain a professional demeanor in interactions with physicians and lab personnel.
- All laboratory personnel required to maintain schedule flexibility and may be required to work overtime when problems arise.
- Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
- May be exposed to hazardous waste materials including stain waste (hematoxylin, eosin, etc.), aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible organics (ethanol and isopropanol).
- Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
- Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
- Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- May be exposed to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio‑hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
- May be required to handle blood‑borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.
