Paramedic

This position contributes to the fulfillment of Thayer County Health Services vision and mission by rendering basic and advanced life support and medical techniques in the ambulance, emergency room, and medical-surgical setting. This also includes participating in continuing education and training relative to medical and industry advancements.

Full-Time, Non-Exempt, On-call hours and weekend/holiday rotation

Job Qualifications
  • Graduate of an Accredited Paramedic program.
  • Active Nebraska Paramedic licensure required. National Registry Certification preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Paramedic is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Performs triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the basic and advanced life support level. Provides continuing care and treatment while enroute to an emergency medical facility; monitors and electronically reports changes in patient condition.
  • Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders performs a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, intubation and pulmonary ventilation, drawing of blood samples for analysis, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills contained within the Department of Transportation manual of knowledge objectives for Paramedics.
  • Employs safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Handles radio communications during emergency and non-emergency situations professionally.
  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments. Reviews, discusses, and implements health care provider orders appropriately.
  • Assists in planning, providing, and evaluating patient care as a member of the health care team.
  • Performs efficiently and safely within scope of practice. Prepares, administers, and documents medications and treatments as ordered by the health care provider using barcode administration within the electronic health record when functioning in the hospital paramedic role.
  • Documents accurate and ongoing assessments of patient status to reflect interventions, patient responses, patient teaching, and status of outcomes orts general and specific physical and mental conditions and of patients, and signs and symptoms, to the appropriate person, which may be indicative of change.
  • Performs hourly rounding.
  • Participates in nursing care plans for total patient care according to provider instructions and in conformance with established standards, recognized nursing techniques, procedures, and administrative policies.
  • Assumes responsibility for accuracy of procedures and maintenance of high standards of care. Maintains accurate and complete records.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
  • Assists in training and orientation of new employees.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance, committees where needed, attend in-service programs, meetings, and educational workshops.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Performance Standards
  • Knowledgeable in approved medical protocols, standing orders, policies and procedures, techniques of proper drug administration, emergency medical techniques, medical terminology and abbreviations, medical characteristics of various drugs and solutions, record keeping procedures and methods of documentation, all applicable local, state and federal regulations, infectious disease, universal precautions and decontamination.
  • Possession of Nebraska Paramedic Certification or Licensed Paramedic.
  • Basic Trauma Life Support Certificate and Advanced Life Support Certificate.
  • Must maintain yearly CE hours with current guidelines.
  • Must exercise profession l initiative to stay current with new drugs and treatment procedure guidelines.
  • Maintains and promotes good health practices.
