Medical Laboratory Tech

Howard County Medical Center invites applications for the position of Medical Laboratory Tech at its location in St. Paul, Nebraska. The Medical Laboratory Tech's primary function is to perform a variety of microscopic, chemical, hematological, blood banking and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objectives of Howard County Medical Center.

Occasional weekend call is required.

  • The shift for this position is 9:00pm - 5:30am M-F
Essential Duties
  • Performs various laboratory functions according to Laboratory policy.
    • Conducts microscopic, chemical, bacteriological, and hematological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease
    • Assists with phlebotomy on inpatients and outpatients as necessary
    • Ensures quality control by performing testing; documents as required.
    • Completes faxed orders from miscellaneous physicians.
  • Records patients results accurately.
    • Documents proficiently (within the Laboratory Information System) patient results.
    • Reports patient results to medical providers as required.
  • Performs laboratory maintenance on instruments and equipment.
    • Troubleshoots issues that may arise with laboratory equipment.
  • Completes yearly competency testing in all areas of the Lab and maintains education by keeping informed of new trends and developments in the field of medical technology.
    • Makes suggestions which could result in a positive financial performance and increased customer satisfaction.
  • Helps maintain Laboratory inventory.
  • Demonstrates Teamwork through collaboration, working well with others, concern for co-workers, and a team approach to accomplishing service and quality.
    • Maintains a good working relationship with co-workers and immediate supervisors as well as with other departments.
    • Utilizes, supports and encourages others to use the TeamSTEPPS tools to ensure the safety of our patients and better communication between co-workers, other Howard County Medical Center departments, patients and their families and organizations Howard County Medical Center does business with.
    • Deals well with constructive criticism.
    • Takes the initiative to accept responsibility in organizing new or difficult assignments.
  • Presents self in a professional manner and enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
    • Seeks opportunities for continued growth and performance improvement.
    • Always maintains a professional appearance and manner.
    • Maintains dependability and completes work in a timely matter.
    • Demonstrates an understanding and emphasis on quantity, quality and knowledge of duties and tasks.
  • Complies, understands, and enforces state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of Howard County Medical Center operations and requirements, including but not limited to HIPAA, the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, Safety and Infection Control, all department and organization-wide policies, Critical Access Hospital requirements, and Federal and State of Nebraska regulations.
    • Maintains confidentiality, is in compliance and follows HIPAA regulations.
    • Follows all policies of the hospital and clinic.
    • Follows and knows safety policies and procedures.
    • Attends all scheduled meetings and participates in these meetings.
    • Considers the impact of regulations in work that is produced and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification
  • Two years of Medical Laboratory Technician experience preferred, but not required
  • Clinical training in an approved accredited program or previous work experience in a Clinic or Hospital setting
