The Nebraska State Historical Society, NSHS, at the Fort Robinson History Center is seeking an individual primarily focused in providing living history interpretation and assisting in the historical tours around Fort Robinson. The role requires in-depth knowledge of Fort Robinson, late nineteenth century military history/Great Plains Indian Wars, the American West, and Westward Expansion, and the ability to share these histories in a first-person living history capacity.

This includes wearing historically accurate uniforms and clothing during tours and while stationed at one of a dozen historical buildings for visitors.

Job Duties
  • Provide enthusiastic and energetic historical tours in cooperation with the Nebraska Game & Parks.
  • Communicate various histories and stories while stationed at NSHS historical buildings at Fort Robinson and around the fort grounds.
  • Learn, adapt, and utilize research-based material about Fort Robinson history and related subjects.
  • Greet visitors at NSHS historical locations at the Fort Robinson History Center and around the fort grounds.
  • Collect admissions and sell merchandise in the gift shop; provide excellent customer service.
  • Assist in stocking and maintaining merchandise on the sales floor and communicate when products are low.
  • Balance and prepare daily sales reports and other essential reports using POS systems.
  • Assist with custodial duties and other light regular housekeeping duties.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the classification.
Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture.

Preferred: High School graduate and experience with customer service OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning or areas related to Nebraska history, geography or culture.

Other: Start/End Dates - preferred dates of employment are May 1 to September 7. We can accommodate around school schedules for beginning or ending dates if necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of, or desire to learn, Nebraska's history, culture and the western United States. Ability to interact with the public professionally, work well with people of all ages and abilities. Excellent customer service skills, outgoing and friendly personality. Regular and reliable attendance is required. Attention to detail is a must. Temporary housing is available with this position but not required.
