Responsibilities

OPPD is seeking an electrical engineer to assist with developing 900 MW of new combustion turbine thermal generation units and converting 320 MW of existing units to dual‑fuel capability. Initial responsibilities will include project engineering support for the design, procurement, construction and startup activities of combustion turbines. The role will also provide engineering support associated with operational readiness activities for new turbines, such as drawing reviews, system description reviews, equipment criticality evaluations, spare parts reviews, and the creation of preventive maintenance tasks.

As the position matures, the engineer will serve primarily as a Power Generation Engineer supporting the facilities, and may also assist with electrical engineering responsibilities at other district generation sites. The engineer will be accountable for specific plant systems and equipment, providing timely technical on‑site support for station activities, plant modifications, performance analysis, technical review of operating reports, evaluation of system performance, and complex technical analysis to troubleshoot and resolve plant issues.

Performance is measured by reliability, material condition, safety, economics and the performance of assigned systems and projects.

  • Under technical direction, perform system health monitoring, identify critical systems or components, track trends and issues that affect reliability and performance, and develop corrective action plans as part of the reliability‑centered maintenance program.
  • Perform analysis or diagnostic evaluations, applying broad engineering principles and practices based on education and experience within the engineer’s discipline.
  • Accountable for a detailed understanding of assigned systems, including principles of operation, typical configuration, maintenance strategy, and modes of HTC failure.
  • Apply basic project management principles to support the execution of large, complex or time‑sensitive work.
  • Develop and lead complex troubleshooting of emergent plant problems exceeding the skill of maintenance and operations staff, using broad techniques and engineering principles.
  • Accountable for a cursory understanding of all applicable governmental, code, industry standards and environmental regulations.
  • Accountable for a detailed understanding of internal procedures, policies and reliability standards.
  • Accountable for safety, reliability, operability and economy of assigned tasks and projects.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree (ABET‑accredited).
  • Two (2) years of equivalent engineering work experience; experience in special projects and committees may be considered, and a master’s degree may be considered for up to two years of experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the utility industry and power generation.
  • Knowledge of the regulations and codes applicable to the engineer’s discipline.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to adapt communication for varied audiences.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Desired:

  • Familiarity and experience with Ventyx (Asset Suite), Cognos, Auto Basement CAD, Inventor, Vault, Bentley Micro Station, People Soft.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT/FE), PE license or other industry‑level education/certification.
  • Degree in an engineering discipline related to power generation.
  • Master’s degree in engineering or business.
  • Demonstrated capabilities of researching engineering and operational issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and presenting those recommendations.
  • Advanced MS Office professional skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Electric utility power plant operation and maintenance exposure.
  • Understanding of codes and regulations applicable to power generation facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of OPPD’s transmission & distribution, substation and generation system.
