- Reviews blueprints, drawings, diagrams and specifications to fabricate and repair wood components; fabricates doors, ladders, cabinets, crates, GRP handrails; installs plywood deck protection and protective coverings; mills wooden blocks for ships in dry-dock; modify, and installs false deck panels.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
- High school or equivalent education certificate, AA degree from junior college or apprenticeship program for journeyman preferred from accredited organization.
- Minimum of two years experience required, three to five years preferred. Basic rough and finish carpentry skills including framing and cabinet making required. Must have knowledge to safely operate all shop machinery and hand and power tools. Must be able to operate high reaching equipment. Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, on board ships, and on any shift.
Must be able to hear warning signals and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.
- Mill wood blocking from blueprints and measurement tables for dry-dock to accommodate ships.
- Measure, cut, and fit plywood on site for environmental and deck protection.
- Measure, cut, and fit wood blanking protection.
- Fabricate DC plugs for hull penetration protection.
- Fabricate repairs and install doors, cabinets, wood handrails, ladders shipping crates, and GRP handrails.
- Fabricate, modify and install false deck panels. (Nomex)
- Fabricate wood blocking for boat davits.
- Perform finish work as needed, such as adding formic to metal tables, laying down linoleum.
- Perform general shipyard building construction and repair.
- Other job tasks as assigned relevant to the trade.
Wood, adhesives, bond fillers, fiber glass, resins, fasteners, scaffolding materials, rope, and cleaning materials; various power and hand tools such as pneumatic guns and stapler guns, table saws, wood sanders, edge routers, measuring devices, and tool belt; high reach equipment; blueprints, and personal protective equipment required.
Physical/Mental InvolvementFrequent lifting/carrying materials and equipment up to 50 lbs (frequent) alone and to 120 lbs assisted. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Working in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships.
Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions. Maintaining general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area.
Works with the General Services Department in erecting and dismantling scaffold, water evacuation, load out and grooming compartments. Works with the Paint Department in performing surface preparation and painting application activities. Works with the Blast Department in performing blast setup, recovery, blow down and final groom. Removes scrap and general housekeeping required in work areas. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.

Exposure to airborne dust, toxic chemicals, fumes, odors, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to moving machines, traffic from trades, tool vibrations, electrical shock, and high levels of constant noise.
