Schedule- 24 ½ hours per week; slightly flexible
- Monday 9:30am-5:30pm
- Tues, Wed, Fri - 9:30am - 3:00pm
Pay Rate: $24.00 - $32.00 per hour depending on experience

DescriptionThe Assistant Director assists the Director in performing professional and administrative work; helps to manage all activities and services of the library and assumes responsibility for the library in the absence of the Library Director. The employee also acts as Head of Children’s Services. The role offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in library administration, leadership, and decision‑making within a busy public library.
SupervisoryResponsibility
In collaboration with the library director, the employee is responsible for the supervision of part‑time library staff and volunteers and is directly responsible for part‑time staff and volunteers in regards to the Children’s Department.
Essential Functions- Assist the Director in planning, organizing, and administering the operations, programs, collections, and services of the library.
- In the absence of the Director, responsible for all operations of the library, including staff supervision, responding to emergencies, and representing the library to the media and community.
- Plan, execute, and evaluate programs for children, young adults and their families.
- Evaluate, select, and maintain library materials for children which reflect a variety of diversified cultural and educational interests with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Supervise staff and volunteers assigned to children’s services.
- Provide community outreach and serve as liaison for community organizations, town departments, and local businesses who work with or provide services to children of all ages. Partner with such organizations to promote the library and its services.
- Oversee all public relations, promotional and publicity efforts for all media outlets for children’s library services through press releases, outreach services, website, social media, printed brochures and flyers.
- Perform circulation duties such as patron registration, checking books in and out, and placing reserves. Assist patrons with problems on computers, printers and devices.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program is preferred.
- Two years of supervisory experience in children’s services, including book selection and programming is strongly recommended.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.
- Professional knowledge of a broad range of library science principles, concepts, techniques, and tools.
- Substantial knowledge of children’s literature, interests, development and services and ability to relate these to the needs of individual children.
- Strong technology skills including Word, Excel, Google Suites, Canva and Word Press. Social media skills a plus.

Physical Skills- The ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Motor skills needed for moving objects, operating a computer, copying and scanning documents.
- Ability to read, see, and differentiate between colors. Ability to read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes on a daily basis. Ability to read a computer or mobile device daily.
