Title and Definition
- Assessment:
Conducts comprehensive assessments of the laboring mother, including fetal monitoring, pain management, and maternal vital signs. Assesses newborns immediately after birth, ensuring proper identification, Apgar scoring, and initiation of necessary care. - Care Planning:
Develops individualized care plans based on patient assessments and collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care. - Labor Support:
Provides continuous labor support, including emotional support, education, and guidance on various comfort measures and pain management techniques. - Delivery Assistance:
Assists with vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, including acting as an OB assist to the physician. Prepares and maintains sterile fields, administers medications as ordered, and provides immediate postpartum care to both mother and newborn. - Recovery and Postpartum Care:
Monitors mothers and newborns during the recovery period; assists with breastfeeding or formula feeding; provides education on newborn care; addresses any concerns or complications. - Newborn Care:
Provides expert care for newborns, including routine screenings, vaccinations, and monitoring for jaundice and other common neonatal conditions; facilitates early skin-to-skin contact to promote bonding and breastfeeding success; supports parents in understanding and responding to their newborn's cues and needs. - Level II NICU Care:
Provides specialized care for newborns requiring Level II NICU interventions, including respiratory support, intravenous therapy, and feeding assistance; monitors vital signs, administers medications, and performs procedures as ordered by the neonatologist or neonatal nurse practitioner; educates parents on the specialized care their newborn is receiving and fosters a supportive environment for the family. - Medication Administration:
Administers medications safely and accurately, adhering to hospital protocols and physician orders. - Documentation:
Maintains accurate and comprehensive documentation of all patient care activities, including assessments, interventions, and patient responses. - Patient
Education:
Educates patients and families on labor progress, pain management options, newborn care, postpartum self-care, and available resources.
- Collaboration:
Collaborates effectively with physicians, midwives, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals to provide seamless and holistic care. - Emergency Response:
Responds promptly and effectively to emergencies, including fetal distress, postpartum hemorrhage, and newborn resuscitation. - Additional duties to be performed as assigned by the acting Manager / Director.

- NEO RESUS – Required
- STABLE – Required
- ACLS – Required
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee – Current and unrestricted – Required
- NRP – Required
- AWHONN Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring – Required within 90‑days of hire
- S.T.A.B.L.E – Required within 30 days of hire
- CPI – Required within 30 days of hire
- ACLS – Required within 60 days of hire
- Additional certifications in fetal monitoring or other relevant areas – Preferred
- Years of Experience – 2 years – Required
- Type of Experience – Healthcare/Medical - Nurse:
Registered Nurse - Additional experience requirements:
- A minimum of 2 years of recent experience in L&D, PP, and NICU Level II/Nursery area is preferred but cross‑training will be provided for those proficient in one or two of those areas.
- Recent experience in an acute care facility is highly desirable.
- Experience with quality/performance improvement programs utilizing clinical pathways/guidelines is a significant asset.
- Recent experience in an acute care facility is preferred.

- Knowledge of the Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory standards is preferred.
- The candidate must be able to link quality of care/services to patient satisfaction, financial, and other statistical data.
- The candidate must possess excellent computer and interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to educate staff and physicians effectively.
- Surgical OB Assist is required, training available within 30 days of hire.
