The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn patients.

The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.

The CNM practice includes primary as well as specialized care provided in multiple locations such as outpatient clinics and the hospital. The CNM promotes safety and quality in clinical care and provides leadership in the organization.

II. Essential Job Functions/Duties
  • Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the certified nurse midwife.
  • Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
  • Document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  • Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners.
  • Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
  • Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
  • Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care as defined by the nurse midwifery service.
  • Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
  • Utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Tennessee Board of Nursing.
  • Document all prescriptions in patient’s medical record.
  • Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions.
  • Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient
  • Responsible for call coverage in the hospital setting to manage antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care management, including delivery and triage.
  • Assists team members with inbound clinical triage
  • Provides direction to interdisciplinary team/ staff regarding treatment of the patient conditions.
  • Provides patient education, advice and information on health assessment, disease processes, medications and treatment plans.
  • Monitors the quality of care delivered.
  • Ensure Joint Commission and other regulatory standards are met.
  • Engages in effective communication.
  • Utilizes conflict-resolution skills as needed.
  • Demonstrates use of shared decision making skills.
  • Works collaboratively across disciplines and administrative functions.
  • Shares and receives information, concerns and feedback in a supportive manner.
III. Additional Job Functions/Duties
  • Cross-train/backup in functions that support the RN, LPN and MAs.
  • Troubleshoots and acts as a resource for team members
  • Role model advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

IV. Education, Experience and Credentialing

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited program for Advanced Practice Nurses.
  • Advanced education and training in the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions and chronic illnesses related to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care, as well as gynecologic patient issues
  • Current licensure as an advanced practice nurse, and board certified as a certified nurse midwife
  • Meets all requirements required for privileges of service.
  • Eligible for a DEA and a NPI #.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Preferred Requirements:

  • At least one year of full scope midwifery experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
