Job Summary

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, delivering expert care in a high‑acuity, fast‑paced environment. In close collaboration with Neurology and Neurosurgery colleagues, the APP provides specialized care to patients with complex neurological and critical care needs, ensuring seamless coordination and optimal outcomes. The APP makes critical decisions, manages patient care plans, responds swiftly to changing conditions, and maintains timely, accurate documentation while pursuing continuous professional development.

Department Summary

The Vanderbilt Neurological ICU is one of the largest in the country with 23 ICU beds and 12 step‑down beds. Patients are referred from across the southeastern United States. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center
, the ICU provides top‑level care for brain tumors, strokes, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disorders, and other neurological diseases. The unit has earned the AACN Beacon Award and the Professional Research Consultants’ Excellence in Healthcare award.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document a health history; perform and document a complete, system‑focused, or symptom‑specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
  • Collaborate to provide primary, acute, and complex care, managing patients’ overall care and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Order, perform, interpret, and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Form differential diagnoses and treat acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribe therapeutic interventions—pharmacologic, non‑pharmacologic, and surgical—to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Utilize evidence‑based practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Initiate appropriate referrals and consultations.
  • Provide specialty‑specific consultation services within scope of practice.
  • Facilitate the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
