HDR is recognized by Engineering‑News Record as a Top 10 environmental firm. We are looking for an Environmental Project Manager to support our Environmental Sciences and Planning Cross‑Sector in the Southeast, with the position open to multiple office locations.

Job Description

As the Environmental Project Manager, you will report within the Power Environmental Practice and coordinate closely with our Resources Business Group (RBG) and the Renewable Energy Practice. You will lead environmental planning, permitting, siting, and compliance projects for renewable energy and linear facilities across the Southeast, ensuring all federal, state, and local regulations – including NEPA – are met. You will provide technical QA, manage project schedules and budgets, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and direct medium‑ to large‑size environmental planning and permitting projects for transportation, water/wastewater, facilities, power, and other programs as identified.
  • Prepare, plan, and analyze/review technical studies, permit applications, NEPA documents, and similar reports/documents.
  • Direct and coordinate work of single or multidiscipline teams throughout the project’s lifecycle (from development and initiation to close‑out).
  • Establish and maintain client relations, and participate in marketing, contractual, design, and production meetings.
  • Coordinate workload through entire project development, ensuring completion of documents on schedule.
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust work effort with the team to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Collaborate with Business/Accounting Manager or Project Controller and Department Manager for project reviews and with company management as needed.
  • Mentor mid‑level and junior staff in field survey techniques, permitting, and technical writing.
  • Participate in reviews with governing agencies for compliance.
  • Accomplish work independently and through coordinating or supervising small to large technical and professional teams from local and regional offices.
  • Support regional or national projects in specific areas of technical expertise.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NEPA experience with power and/or renewable energy projects, especially TVA-related work.
  • Experience with private‑sector renewable energy facility interconnections to the TVA system and TVA‑led renewable energy facilities.
  • Knowledge of TVA power and energy projects (transmission, thermal generation, etc.).
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or higher) in botany or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of field botany and plant identification experience.
  • Working knowledge of flora common to the Tennessee Valley.
  • Contribution of specimens to a herbarium or rare plant record within the past 5 years.
  • Client‑relationship development experience (e.g., public service commission or local permitting).
  • Local candidates are preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • At least 7 years of related experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of project management experience.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills (both written and verbal).
