Job Description:
- The Custodial Worker (Second Shift) performs routine custodial and cleaning duties to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment.
- This role supports facility operations through cleaning, basic maintenance, equipment care, and adherence to safety and sanitation standards.
- Perform general custodial duties including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
- Perform routine maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies.
- Empty trash receptacles, bag trash, and dispose of waste into designated dumpsters.
- Unlock and secure doors before and after cleaning assigned areas.
- Report maintenance needs or concerns to appropriate staff, including submitting or recommending work orders.
- Ensure proper care, use, and maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies.
- Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Assist with on-the-job training of new staff on routine custodial procedures.
- Perform cleaning functions specific to assigned facilities, including seasonal or project-based requirements.
- Provide vendors with access to designated areas for cleaning and answer basic questions as needed.
- Report vendor-related issues to supervisors when applicable.
- Assist with snow removal activities and minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or similar duties.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- No previous custodial experience required.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, and custodial equipment.
- Understanding of safety practices related to custodial work, including proper lifting techniques, chemical handling, and use of personal protective equipment.
- Familiarity with basic maintenance and sanitation standards in institutional or educational environments.
- Awareness and sensitivity when working in educational settings with students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Ability to operate custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, floor scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to consistently maintain cleanliness standards.
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
- Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with staff, students, and supervisors.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain routine records as required.
- Dependability, reliability, and strong work ethic.
- Basic ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and team members.
- Basic ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and adapt to changing work conditions.
- Ability to understand and interpret applicable codes, policies, regulations, and confidentiality requirements.
- Intermediate ability to operate tools and machinery required for custodial duties.
- Basic ability to collaborate with others and follow standardized procedures for equipment operation.
