Overview

A staff level Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) position is available in the Digestive Disease Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The practice focuses on Gastroenterology and Digestive Disease. As a member of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the NP/PA will provide direct patient care, collaborate with physicians to optimize patient care, and participate in patient teaching.

Job Summary

The specialty NP or PA works in ambulatory care, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team. The role is generally service/physician aligned, managing a distinct patient population in both in-patient and outpatient settings. Patients typically present with general GI symptoms (e.g., abdominal pain, diarrhea, GI bleed, anemia, dysphagia, nausea, vomiting). The NP/PA functions in clinic and inpatient consults with no weekend or after-hours call schedule, and supports adherence to clinical pathways/protocols with a focus on safe, high-quality care.

The NP/PA demonstrates advanced medical and nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, professional communication, timely documentation, professional development, and competency validation. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team is essential, including participation in a twice-monthly multidisciplinary pancreas conference.

Department Summary

Welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. The division provides outstanding care for diseases of the GI tract and liver, trains gastroenterology clinicians and researchers, and conducts cutting-edge research. The team includes nearly 80 physician-scientists, educators, clinicians, advanced practice providers, and research-track investigators.

The division seeks balance between clinical and research activities and aims to attract world-class clinicians, investigators and trainees to VUMC to provide exceptional patient care and innovative research.

Responsibilities and Key Functions

Key functions and expected performances include:

  • Assessment of health status
  • Complete patient history and physical examination for acute and complex chronically ill patients
  • Order and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures
  • Serve as first responder for nursing and house staff in patient status changes and procedural interventions
  • Assess risks related to care of acute and chronically ill patients and determine need for procedures (e.g., upper endoscopy and/or colonoscopy)
  • Coordinate daily clinic and consult schedules, present patient reports, collaborate on plans of care

Diagnosis and Plan of Care:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to diagnose acute and complex chronic GI conditions
  • Manage diagnostic tests, interpret results, and supervise procedures
  • Formulate differential diagnoses by priority and order appropriate interventions
  • Identify expected outcomes and develop a comprehensive plan of care across the continuum
  • Apply evidenced-based practice guidelines in individualized care plans and modify as needed
  • Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions (pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and surgical) to achieve outcomes

Communication and Documentation:

  • Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with the health care team
  • Document progress via daily progress notes, discharge summaries, clinic notes, and other required documentation
