Job SummaryEvaluates and treats patients with speech, language, voice, cognition, fluency, auditory (re) habilitation, and swallowing/oral feeding disorders. Educates and counsels patients and families. Provides independent therapeutic services and identify area(s) of clinical specialization and competency. Supervises graduate students as assigned in clinical specialty area. Participates actively in identifying and conducting quality improvement activities. Collaborates with clinical practice team to achieve patient outcomes and system objectives.

Vanderbilt Health is seeking an Acute Care Speech Language Pathologist PRN to join the adult hospital-based acute care speech therapy team at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. This PRN role provides adult acute care speech therapy, adult swallowing therapy, adult dysphagia assessment, adult cognitive communication evaluation, adult voice therapy, and medical speech therapy in multiple hospital units including ICU, neuro ICU, trauma ICU, surgical ICU, cardiovascular ICU, and acute medical floors.
This position is ideal for a clinician seeking a medical speech language pathologist PRN role within a nationally recognized acute care hospital system. The Acute Care Speech Language Pathologist PRN will evaluate and treat adult patients with swallowing disorders, speech disorders, language disorders, cognitive-communication deficits, and voice disorders in a fast-paced acute care environment. Vanderbilt University Hospital supports advanced clinical practice, evidence-based hospital speech therapy, and multidisciplinary acute care collaboration.
Key Responsibilities – Acute Care Speech Language Pathologist PRN- Provide adult acute care evaluation and treatment for swallowing disorders, adult dysphagia, speech disorders, language disorders, communication disorders, voice disorders, and cognitive-communication disorders in a hospital environment.
- Deliver acute care speech therapy, adult dysphagia care, medical speech therapy, and adult cognitive communication therapy across ICU, step-down, and acute medical units.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, dietitians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and the hospital acute care team to support coordinated adult patient care.
- Apply advanced clinical tools and hospital-based best practices for medically complex adult patients receiving acute care speech-language pathology services.
- Document evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, and discharge recommendations according to Vanderbilt University Hospital and regulatory standards.
- Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited program.
- Clinical Fellowship completed.
- Tennessee SLP license or eligibility.
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence CCC‑SLP.
- One year of adult acute care experience preferred, including adult dysphagia management, acute care speech therapy, and medical speech therapy experience.
