Position Summary

The Recovery Assistant supports Cumberland Heights’ mission by monitoring a specified group of patients, facilitating a safe and therapeutic environment, and assisting clinical staff with the patients’ daily needs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Welcomes new patients and/or family members to campus, assisting with orientation to the campus and program.
  • Manages patient community as a therapeutic milieu, holding patients accountable for behavior consistent with community guidelines and recovery.
  • Assists with community groups, in‑house and outside 12‑Step meetings, and 12‑Step discussion/study groups.
  • Monitors patients, making rounds and bed checks as assigned to create a safe treatment environment.
  • Transports patients to 12‑Step meetings or other therapeutic recreation activities, within the guidelines of the Fleet Management Safety Program.
  • Assists Activities Services staff with recreation, art, music, and adventure‑based therapies.
  • Utilizes “Handle with Care” to de‑escalate potential and actual crisis situations.
  • Performs CPR and First Aid as needed.
  • Participates in team meetings, treatment plan reviews, staff meetings, and quality management activities.
  • Documents pertinent information into the electronic patient record.
  • Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
  • Ensures proper handling and distribution of company funds.
  • Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
  • Reacts productively to change.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • One year of experience in addictions treatment preferred.
  • CPR certification preferred but not required.
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License preferred; company van may be used to transport patients.
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to problem‑solve, analyze, and interpret information.
  • Adaptability to changing circumstances and patient needs in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Cultural sensitivity to a wide variety of patients’ experiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; effective in English.
  • Ability to interact with patients and co‑workers collaboratively while providing guidance.
  • Ability to model/teach the 12‑Step programs and philosophy.
  • Ability to de‑escalate a person in crisis calmly and supportively; work calmly and professionally in stressful situations.
  • Ability to present to hostile or disinterested groups.
  • If recovering, one year of verifiable abstinence required with two years preferred; active participation in a twelve‑step program preferred.
Work Environment
  • Campus setting involving walking outside to various buildings; normal safety precautions required.
  • Frequent contact with people in crisis, including those emotionally volatile, requiring additional safety precautions.
  • May perform CPR/First Aid as needed; certified or eligible.
  • Subject to varying shifts, including weekends, overnight stays for inclement weather, and some travel to other off‑site Cumberland Heights facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs and/or push/pull up to 40 lbs; navigate uneven and rural terrain.
  • Requires basic fine/postural motor skills: speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, reach.
