Position: Engineer 2

Overview

Position Description. This position is in Metro Water Services. The Engineer 2 will be responsible for performing engineering and management activities located in various sections of the Metro Water Services Department. Currently, there are open positions in Stormwater Maintenance and Development Services. Employees at Metro Water Services (MWS) work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in our community.

Responsibilities

Stormwater Maintenance - Investigations

  • Review investigation data to design a stormwater construction.
  • Coordinate with contractors on the scope of the small construction projects and their cost.
  • Review small projects to verify completion and effectiveness before approving the pay requests.
  • Oversee tracking the construction projects and their progress.
  • Oversee the day-to-day duties of several investigators.

Stormwater Maintenance – Capital projects

  • Coordinate assignments, review project designs and ensure regulatory approvals are obtained for plans developed by consulting firms for Stormwater capital projects.
  • Coordinate with consulting firms the size and scope of Stormwater capital projects.
  • Evaluate the proper sizing and functioning of existing/proposed drainage systems.
  • Coordinate with homeowners and community groups regarding existing drainage issues and proposed projects to address them.
  • Coordinate various Metro and State departments regarding stormwater projects, permitting, etc.

Development Services

  • Perform technical engineering review (water, sewer, and stormwater) for new development and redevelopment in the Metro Water Services’ service area, applying associated industry, regulatory (Federal, State, and Local), Metro Government and public health and safety standards.
  • Participates/lead in Development Service (DS) related activities.
  • Respond to inquiries from contractors, consultants, citizens, legislators, and other Metro Departments / MWS Divisions.
  • Assign and review development project plans to contract consultants as needed.
  • Coordinate with other Metro Water Service (MWS) Divisions, Metro Departments and/or agencies on infrastructure-related projects.
  • Coordinates with external stakeholders on development specifics of proposed projects.
  • May supervise internal plans review staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university, Professional Engineering License and six (6) years of post-degree engineering experience, including two (2) years as a professional engineer.
  • OR
  • Professional Engineering License and six (6) years of engineering experience, including two (2) years as a professional engineer.

Licensed Required

  • Valid Driver License
  • Professional Engineer’s License



Note:

A Professional Engineering License from any state is required to apply for this position however, a Tennessee Professional Engineering License must be obtained prior to completion of the six-month probationary period.

Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Environmental or Water Resources
  • Project/program management experience
  • An understanding of engineering principles including the review, design, and construction of water and sewer infrastructure
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD
