About

the Role

The Assistant Head of School – Lower Elementary works in close partnership with the Head of School to ensure a high-quality, developmentally responsive learning experience for students, exceptional service and partnership with families, and a collaborative, growth-oriented work environment for staff.

The primary focus of this role is instructional coaching and leadership for Lower Elementary teachers serving mixed-age classrooms (1st–3rd grade). The Assistant Head of School will provide consistent, embedded coaching to strengthen instructional practice, classroom culture, and student outcomes.

In addition, this role will support the design, refinement, and implementation of the school-wide approach to mathematics, ensuring alignment with our instructional vision and continuous improvement across grade levels.

As a second-year, start-up school, we seek a leader who is highly adaptable, flexible, and willing to innovate—someone who is comfortable building systems while simultaneously refining them, responding to real-time needs, and helping the school grow with intention and creativity.

Key responsibilities
  • Instructional Leadership &

    Coaching:

    Serve as the primary instructional coach for Lower Elementary (1st–3rd grade) mixed-age classrooms, providing ongoing observation, feedback, modeling, and reflective coaching cycles.
  • Professional Learning & Staff Development:
    Facilitate and support in-service training and professional development aligned to school priorities, with particular emphasis on Lower Elementary instruction and mathematics.
  • School Culture & Student Support:
    Support the creation and maintenance of a strong, mission-aligned school culture; support the school’s approach to discipline and restorative practices; and serve as Co-Coordinator (with the Head of School) or Student Support Services Coordinator for IEP, ILP, and 504 meetings and implementation.
  • Family & Community Engagement:
    Build strong relationships with families through clear communication, responsiveness, and problem-solving; support and participate in community outreach events and family engagement initiatives; maintain positive relationships with parent groups, volunteers, and external partners.
  • Operations & Compliance:
    Collaborate with the Director of Operations to establish priorities for instructional materials, budgeting, and purchasing; support implementation of Board, state, and federal policies and procedures at the building level; assist with problem-solving related to staffing, scheduling, and school systems as needed in a start-up environment.
  • Additional Expectations:
    Demonstrate flexibility and a solution-oriented mindset in a growing school environment where roles and systems may evolve; perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

This position may require up to 15% of travel.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience as an Administrator or School Director.
  • Montessori Certification is highly preferred.
  • An affinity for connecting with people.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Compensation
  • Annual Salary: $90,000–$113,000 (based on experience and credentials)
  • Sign-On Bonus: $4,500 for Montessori-Trained Certification in Lower Elementary
