Position: 2025-2026 Choir Director and AP Music Theory Teacher

Summary

Franklin Road Academy is seeking an experienced Choir Director for grades 5-12 and AP Music Theory teacher who will inspire and support our students and be an active participant in our vibrant learning community. This individual should be committed to their own personal and professional growth and be passionate about helping all students progress in the performing arts.

The ideal candidate will be an inspiring educator with a strong background in vocal education and a passion for developing confident, skilled student performers across both middle school and upper school divisions. The fine arts department holds regular meetings to share best practices and foster a collegial atmosphere that promotes growth and development among its members. All candidates should desire to be a part of a collaborative faculty that resonates with FRA's mission to inspire learning and develop leaders of integrity and purpose in an inclusive Christian community.

Community life is a huge part of FRA, as teachers regularly attend games, recitals, and other campus events outside the classroom. All teachers at FRA are advisors of groups of 8-10 students that meet for 20 minutes daily, and teachers are strongly encouraged to integrate themselves into the school community.

Essential Functions

The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct the Middle School and Upper School choirs, including the teaching of a dedicated class for each group.
  • Teach AP Music Theory and other performing arts electives as needed.
  • Build a vertically aligned program where students grow in posture, vocal technique, performance readiness, and music-reading skills over time.
  • Design and implement instruction that aligns with the National Standards for Music Education and the Tennessee Academic Standards
    , including the four artistic-process domains:
    • Perform - developing vocal technique, ensemble skills, music literacy, and expressive performance.
    • Create - offering opportunities for students to compose, arrange, or explore musical ideas.
    • Respond - fostering listening, analysis, self-reflection, and evaluation of music.
    • Connect - helping students understand music within cultural, historical, and interdisciplinary contexts.
  • Manage all aspects of the choir program, including but not limited to music selection, music arrangements, rehearsal schedule, student and parent communications, budget, competition entry forms, and travel arrangements.
  • Direct performing choirs at both division levels and prepare students for school events, concerts, off-campus performances, and vocal competitions annually.
  • Start and lead a vocal club or extracurricular ensemble, such as a show choir, a cappella group, etc.
  • Plan and execute an upper school choir trip biannually.
  • Collaborate with the Arts Department on major showcases, including but not limited to Cocoa and Carols, an Evening with the Arts, and Grandparents Day.
  • Prioritize student relationships, rapport, and program culture to build excitement and increased participation in the vocal arts.
  • Serve as advisor for a group of 8-10 students.
  • Perform general teaching tasks such as tracking attendance, grading assignments, giving feedback, and communicating effectively with students at all skill levels.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours and other faculty responsibilities.
Qualifications

The Choir Director will motivate students to develop an interest in and appreciation of the arts. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader who will be required to oversee all artistic and administrative aspects of the choir program and should possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or higher in a music-related field.
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience; independent school experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading ensembles in performance and competitions.
  • Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral rehearsal techniques, and performance preparation.
  • Proficiency with vocal music and piano.
  • Exhibit successful leadership, organization, public relations, and communication skills.
