Overview

Student-facing Duties
  • Coordinate academic advising through individual and small group meetings, supporting student success across the academic lifecycle.
  • Assess student needs and deliver timely, strategic referrals to college and external support services.
  • Monitor student academic performance, identify risk factors and implement early intervention strategies to address concerns.
  • Supervise the operations of the VUSN student mentors, ensuring compliance with payroll, timesheets and other related HR processes.
Policy Implementation, Compliance And Data Management
  • Interpret and apply school and university academic policies and procedures and ensure consistent, accurate guidance for students.
  • Meticulously track and analyze student retention, progression and success metrics; prepare reports that will drive informed decision making.
  • Monitor and evaluate student success initiatives, utilizing data to recommend and implement continuous improvements.
  • Collaborate with faculty to review student academic progress, ensure compliance with program requirements, and meet deadlines for coursework, progression and graduation.
  • Maintain comprehensive accurate student records and develop reports as required or assigned.
  • Clearly communicate policies, procedures and available resources to students, ensuring transparency and consistency.
Programmatic Leadership And Institutional Support
  • Coordinate and deliver new student orientation programming to ensure seamless transition for new students.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and deliver training and resources consistent with best practices in academic advising.
  • Facilitate workshops, assist with test proctoring, and support related student support success initiatives.
  • Identify, develop, and execute programming that promotes academic achievement, retention and personal success of nursing students.
  • Coordinate tutoring and mentoring initiatives to ensure students are connected to appropriate academic and personal resources.
  • Partner with the administration support data collection, analysis and reporting to advance retention and graduation goals.
  • Serve on School of Nursing committees, contributing expertise and perspective to broaden institutional initiatives.
  • Build and maintain collaborative partnerships across campus support services and centers.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, demonstrating adaptability and a commitment to advancing the mission of the School of Nursing.
Supervisory Relationships

This position will have direct supervisory responsibilities over the operations of the VUSN student mentors. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

Education And Certifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as education or counseling from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field such as education or counseling from an accredited institution of higher education is highly preferred.
Experience And Skills
  • Minimum of two years of academic advising or closely related higher education experience preferred; a combination of relevant experience and education may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising, coaching, and student learning and development theories, with the ability to apply these frameworks effectively in practice.
  • Exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills, with a high level of professionalism, diplomacy, and sound judgment when working with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Proven experience supporting a diverse student population in a college or university setting, with a commitment to inclusive, student-centered practices.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities, with proficiency in Microsoft Office, student information systems, and related technologies; ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
