Harding Academy is seeking a School Counselor for our lower school.
Specifically, we are looking for a Counselor to work with 5th through 8th Grade
, who will be excited to be tied into the rhythm and rhyme of that age group, while working within a counseling department that is collaborative, team‑orientated, and capable of working with students of all ages in our PreK to 8th grade model.

The Counselor will provide support for students and their families who are in need of assistance and will act as a referral source for those who may need ongoing intervention. In addition, the Counselor will assist with any needed crisis interventions. The Counselor will also serve as a resource for teachers in their work with students experiencing or exhibiting behavioral/emotional difficulties.

The School Counselor provides counseling and guidance services to students with social or emotional concerns to facilitate personal development and to enhance the overall learning environment. The Counselor promotes a positive working relationship with students, faculty, staff, parents, and members of the Harding Academy community. The Counselor works in coordination with the Counseling Department, Division Directors, faculty and parents to develop programming appropriate to the needs of the students.

This is a full‑time position beginning no earlier than August 6, 2026.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide individual counseling and guidance to students and make referrals to outside sources when extended counseling or support are necessary.
  • Provide crisis intervention for students and families facing emergency situations and make appropriate outside referrals.
  • Collaborate with the Counseling Department and other relevant student support positions at the school, plan and execute The Insight Series to educate parents about current and age‑appropriate topics.
  • Assist in the review and internal development of a comprehensive health and wellness curriculum including, but not limited to, age‑appropriate life skills, human sexuality, abuse prevention, resilience development, digital citizenship, social media awareness and self‑discipline.
  • Consult with teachers and administrators regularly to provide information and support, to suggest strategies to help students, and to receive feedback on student needs.
  • Review and provide insight and support to the student support team when psych‑educational evaluations are shared with the school.
  • Consult with families regarding the growth and development of their children.
  • Create and maintain student records in observance of confidentiality and privacy.
  • Develop and maintain a library of pertinent information related to social and emotional concerns for developmentally appropriate social and emotional concerns and have materials available for students, parents, and staff.
  • Attend professional development workshops and conferences to stay current in the counseling field.
  • Qualifications/Experience
  • A Master’s Degree required in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, School Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Applied Psychology
  • Current licensure and/or credential as a clinical social worker, psychologist, school counselor or related field
  • Three to five years direct experience preferred
  • Experience with program development and implementation a plus
  • Mindfulness experience/formal training a plus
