BOOK DESIGN AND PRODUCTION SPECIALIST at R.H. Boyd

Position Overview: R.H. Boyd is seeking a highly skilled and results‑driven Book Designer and Production Specialist who will design, format, and typeset print and digital publications, ensuring each book is visually appealing, easy to read, and meets our high‑quality standards. The role includes creating eye‑catching, market‑appropriate book covers and collaborating closely with authors, editors, the marketing team, and the production team to align all aspects of layout and design with the vision of our publications.

• Design and format interior layouts for a wide range of books, including novels, textbooks, curriculum, and specialty publications.
• Create compelling and marketable book cover designs that resonate with target audiences.
• Ensure proper typesetting, spacing, and font choices to produce readable, visually appealing content.
• Work with editorial and production teams to incorporate text, images, charts, and other elements seamlessly into book layouts.
• Create and utilize layout templates for consistency and workflow efficiency across multiple projects.
• Adjust and fine‑tune layouts and cover designs based on editorial feedback, maintaining consistency in style.
• Prepare print‑ready and digital files for submission to printers and eBook platforms.
• Stay current with design trends, publishing standards, and best practices in book production.
• Collaborate with marketing and editorial teams to align cover designs with brand and marketing strategies.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and project timelines.
• Apply effective time‑management strategies to optimize workflow and ensure timely delivery of all projects.
• Ensure that layouts and cover designs meet technical specifications required by printers and digital platforms (e.g., Ingram Spark, Amazon KDP).

• Exceptional attention to detail and a focus on accuracy and accountability.
• Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners.
• At least 2 years of design experience, preferably within the publishing industry.
• Proven experience as a book designer, cover designer, or in a similar role.
• Knowledge of current trends in book design, typography, and formatting standards.
• A portfolio demonstrating previous book layout, typesetting, and cover design work.
• Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Familiarity with typesetting principles, typography, and layout design.
• Experience with both print and digital book formats, including knowledge of ePub and PDF standards.
• Evidence of creating and using layout templates to streamline production processes.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
• Familiarity with book production software.
