A Milling Machine Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described below. A Milling Machine Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.
Key Duties- Operate a milling machine while maintaining the depth of cut and cross slope required by project contract documents.
- Remove existing asphalt pavement by milling to improve ride ability and cross slope, lower finished grade adjacent to existing curb prior to resurfacing, or completely remove existing pavement.
- Follow specific plans to specify an average depth of cut.
- Use a built‑in automatic grade control system while controlling transverse slope and longitudinal profile to produce specified results.
- Control dust escape during removal operations.
- Use alternative removal and crushing equipment if specified equipment is unavailable.
- Understand basic survey nomenclature and judge distance and slopes accurately.
- Make decisions based on verifiable standards.
- Remove existing raised reflective pavement markers prior to milling.
- Milling cross slope, removing pavement to the average depth specified in plans.
- Use a string line to maintain proper alignment.
- Randomly take measurements of cross slope during milling.
- Understand production and quantity requirements.
- Utilize automatic grade control system.
- Schedule work while maintaining production.
- Haul and stockpile or otherwise dispose of milled material as instructed.
- Lead and delegate work within the work scope.
- Train other crew members.
- Maintain daily equipment upkeep to remain in safe working order.
- Notify supervisor if equipment needs repair.
- Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.
- General: Perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
- Education and Experience: This is not an entry-level job; requires demonstrable previous experience as a Milling Machine Operator.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Must understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and crew.
- Three to five years or more of industry‑related experience, especially on roads, highways, and bridges.
- Constant physical effort, including standing, for at least eight hours per day; ability to stand, stoop, bend, and crouch as needed.
- Lift and carry 50–90 pounds frequently and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
- Maintain constant alertness to site activities, equipment, and mobile machinery.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces and in varying weather conditions.
- Provide direction and flagging for crane operators up to 300‑ton capacity under varying light and weather.
- Climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
- Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready‑mixed concrete.
- Assess work environment for hazards and ensure training is adequate.
- Use proper personal protective equipment and tools.
- Speak up if seeing an unsafe act.
- Record and submit near‑miss reports.
- Seek help when needed to perform tasks safely.
- Consider safer ways to perform work and communicate them.
