This is a journey-level painting position. It involves responsibility for performing skilled painting tasks, such as applying paint to a variety of surfaces with a brush or spray gun. Occasionally, work may require performing hazardous duties from scaffolding, ladders, and bucket lifts. Assignments are received in oral or written form, and the work is performed independently and is subject to inspection by a superior during progress and upon completion.

Responsibilities- Applies paints, lacquers, varnishes, and sealers to interiors, exteriors, and furniture; paints metal, panels, and structural steel.
- Prepares surfaces for painting; uses a pressure cleaner; scrapes and primes wood; applies a bonding coat to masonry surfaces; patches and caulks cracks; strips old paint; prepares and paints metal.
- Maintains tools and equipment in proper and safe working order.
- May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is designated as Mission Critical.
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Two years of experience in journey-level painting
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.
- Required to pass an elevated background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department upon hire.
- Required to pass and maintain qualification for:
- Respiratory Protection Physical
- Pulmonary Function
- Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s)
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and techniques of the trade and paints, varnishes, stains, shellacs, lacquers, enamels, solvents, and other materials used in painting.
- Considerable knowledge of preparing surfaces for painting or other finishing methods.
- Knowledge of environmental disposal requirements.
- Skill in applying paints and other finishes by brush or air guns.
- Skill in blending, harmonizing, and contrasting colors, tints, and shades.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, rough layouts, standard drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to work from ladders, high scaffolds, bucket lifts, and bucket trucks.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- The job requires heavy work, including walking, bending, twisting, and standing frequently.
- The job requires the ability to lift up to 60 pounds continuously.
- The job risks exposure to significant environmental hazards in a body shop environment.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, taste, smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
