The Chaplain provides spiritual / pastoral / liturgical / sacramental ministry in a hospital setting. The Chaplain is a member of the interdisciplinary team and provides spiritual and emotional care to patients and their families. Additionally, the Chaplain provides support to colleagues by promoting wellness and mitigating the effects of compassion fatigue.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Provides pastoral care that meets the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, patients' families, medical staff and volunteers.
- Acknowledges and respects stakeholders’ beliefs, culture and values related to life’s meaning, including suffering and loss and the desire to receive support.
- Understands principles of spiritual care and the value of within the healthcare continuum.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills related to adjustment to condition, goals of care, advanced care planning, grief and bereavement care.
- Demonstrates a knowledge of theology, spirituality, religions and religious diversity.
- Provides a spiritual assessment of the patient/family/caregivers; develops a comprehensive spiritual care plan in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team, and overall care plan.
- Strives to reduce patients’ and families’ anxiety and spiritual distress by facilitating spiritual comfort, healing and support.
- Documents all patient/family/caregiver contacts; promotes coordination amongst the interdisciplinary team and professionals involved in the patient’s care plan.
- Collaborate with the Director of Pastoral Care to provide pastoral care coverage.
- Promotes and supports an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care.
- Serves on institutional committees as appointed.
- Promotes a positive & effective working relationship with patients/families, physicians, healthcare professionals, community faith-based organizations and members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Participates in community outreach programs, civic organizations and clergy groups to enhance the vision, mission and visibility of pastoral care.
- Provides on-call Chaplain duties as assigned.
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Must satisfy one of the following:
- Graduate Theological Degree or equivalent with 2 years’ experience in spiritual care.
- In process of Graduate Theological Degree with 4 years’ experience in spiritual care.
- A minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an ACPE accredited center preferred;
Clinical Pastoral Education is required. - Staff chaplain position preferred.
- Ordained and endorsed by denomination.
- Eligible for Board Certification as Chaplain with APC, NACC, NAJC or CPSP within 2 years of hire.
- Intermediate computer knowledge:
Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
