Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for inventory management, distribution, receiving, and sterile processing of instruments and equipment. They maintain the case cart room, keep sterile products, and accurately pull cases based on physician preference cards.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Follows department policies and procedures, acting as preceptor for staff.
  • Uses PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as impervious gown, face shield, and gloves appropriate to the department.
  • Runs washer/decontaminator, loads instruments correctly, operates properly, and records each load.
  • Uses Sonic Cleaner and compressed air appropriately.
  • Receives contaminated instruments and equipment, disassembles instruments, mechanically cleans, and hand washes micro instruments and rubber goods.
  • Sorts instruments into specific sets across all specialties using knowledge of instrument trays.
  • Identifies heat‑ and fluid‑sensitive instrumentation that requires hand cleaning and drying.
  • Follows all manufacturers’ Instructions for Use (IFU) in instrument management.
  • Leverages knowledge of the dryer unit.
  • Assembles instruments and serves as a resource for specialty trays.
  • Inspects instruments and uses count sheets to assemble sets.
  • Prepares utensils for all specialties, wrapping, pouch packaging, dating items, and paper wrapping while ensuring contents are not compromised.
  • Understands types of sterilizers and cleans each system:
    Steam, Sterrad, and Steris System 1.
  • Manages sterilization parameters, including loading control books and interpreting results to validate steam tape, gas tape, and internal steam integrators.
  • Handles biological indicators: proper placement, quality control, incubation, reading results, documentation, and validation for all indicator types.
  • Considers physician preferences and supply locations to reconcile cards to special procedures.
  • Applies medical terminology and surgical case types across all specialties.
  • Takes initiative, assists others, prepares end‑of‑shift reports, and supervises staff.
  • Identifies opportunities to reduce waste and expense.
Education, Experience And Qualifications
  • Minimum of High School or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a Surgical Tech or Sterile Processing Tech training program.
  • OR Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from CBSPD Program OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association.
  • OR Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in a sterile processing department and obtaining CSPDT or CRCST within one year of hire.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge:
    Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
