The Medical Assistant Student is a full‑time paid program. In four to five months, you will be educated to become a Medical Assistant. Training includes classroom setting learning and hands on clinical learning. After completing the program, you are required to commit two years as a Medical Assistant with NCH. A Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices under the direction of a supervising nurse.
Program starts on January 12th, 2026. We are accepting 8 candidates.
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
- Escort patients to exam/procedure rooms.
- Observe, record, and report patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
- Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
- Collect patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
- Provide patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
- Assist providers with various procedures as needed.
- Document in the Electronic Medical Record and relay information/instructions to patient/family. Document all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
- Answer patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
- Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
- Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
- Utilize electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.
- Minimum of High School or GED required.
- Completion of Medical Terminology preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data.
