Job SummaryThe EEG Technologist is registered in EEG (R.EEG.T) and works unsupervised. They are responsible for the acquisition of EEG testing to include routine EEG, continuous EEG, and intra‑operative EEG monitoring. The EEG Technologist will also perform evoked potential testing to include VER, SSEP, and BAER procedures. Nerve conduction testing and assisting physicians with EMG testing along with other specialized testing are also included.
All age populations are served by the EEG Technologist.
Other duties performed by the Technologist include the scheduling of in‑and out‑patients, maintaining testing logs, troubleshooting of equipment, interaction with physicians and outside reading contractors, and ordering appropriate supplies. EEG Technologists provide training and education to EEG technicians as well as supervision of testing as required. On‑call is required for off hours and weekends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Performs various types of testing in the department and in the inpatient, emergency department and operating room setting.
- Performs on‑call responsibilities and adheres to department policies regarding time requirements for STAT procedures and after‑hours response.
- Participates in orientation, training, competency assessment and supervision of EEG technicians; provides education and information to other hospital personnel.
- Identifies various types of waveforms and assists the physician in interpretation of completed studies.
- Communicates potential abnormal studies or results to the reading physician or surgeon during or after testing.
- Assists in the collection of quality improvement data and participates in action plans to correct deficiencies in care processes.
- Orders all required supplies to complete testing requirements.
- Assists director in identifying operational and capital equipment needs; evaluates new products, services, and equipment.
- Completes all documentation in the electronic medical record and maintains archiving of all records.
- Interacts with information systems and equipment manufacturers to troubleshoot equipment, upgrade and document needs.
- Acquires patient neurological tracings and patient data while eliminating artifacts and annotating key events.
- Calibrates all diagnostic equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Ensures all equipment is clean and infection prevention guidelines are followed.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the international 10/20 system for electrode placement.
- Performs file management and archiving of records as necessary.
- Safely utilizes adhesive products such as collodion or acetone for electrode securing.
- Maintains a clean work environment, calibrates equipment, and documents procedures performed.
- Applies appropriate charges for work done and verifies that charges have been captured.
- Documents procedures accurately and maintains electronic medical record.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Electroencephalography approved by CAAHEP and registered by ABRET in EEG (R.EEG.T); bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Additional ABRET certifications preferred (e.g., CNIM, R.EPT., CLTM, CAP, CMEG, NA‑CLTM, R.NCS.T., CNIM‑CS, RPSGT).
- Minimum of 2 years previous experience in neuro‑diagnostics required.
- BLS certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Intermediate computer knowledge: uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
