The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
- Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms. Observes, records and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
- Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
- Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
- Provide patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
- Assisting providers with various procedures as needed.
- Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and relays information/instructions to patient/family. Documents all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
- Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
- Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
- Utilizes electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.
- Minimum of High School or GED required.
- Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience performing above duties in a medical office setting or medical capacity.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
- Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
- Intermediate computer knowledge:
Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows - Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
- Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
