Job SummaryThe Lab Assistant receives and processes all incoming specimens to prepare them for technical assay, ensures specimens are handled safely to reduce cross contamination, pour‑off errors, mislabeling, and missed tests. The Lab Assistant is responsible for ensuring that specimens are stored under proper conditions for optimal results. The Lab Assistant delivers prepared specimens to appropriate areas in a timely manner. The Lab Assistant is responsible for the skillful procurement of blood samples for all age groups, using knowledge of blood collection devices, order of draw, techniques, age specific needs and human anatomy.
The Lab Assistant also performs the pre‑analytical duties associated with accessioning incoming specimens into the lab computer system and evaluating specimen identification and integrity. The Lab Assistant answers incoming phone calls to the lab, providing information on specimen collection, preservation, test orders, and status to other hospital staff members.
- Demonstrate skillful, courteous competency in procedures for blood sample collection, selecting the best equipment and site for the tests requested. Serve as expert venipuncture resource for difficult sticks.
- Evaluate specimen integrity, determine acceptability, demonstrate good customer service, and advise staff when necessary.
- Answer 100% of phone calls coming into the laboratory; respond to over 50% personally; communicate courteously and professionally.
- Respond to inquiries from medical staff and nurses, provide accurate information on specimen collection, containers, quantities, stability, and specimen preservation for all specimen types.
- Handle samples to maintain integrity, be aware of limitations of various specimen types, test requirements, and storage conditions.
- Use computer systems (Pathnet, Quest
360, Power chart) to view orders, place orders, and investigate status of samples, performing patient registration and test selection with speed and accuracy. - Manage blood collection requests, consolidate requests from multiple physicians, and complete collections on schedule to enhance satisfaction.
- Accurately describe and demonstrate all methods of procurement of blood samples, ensuring 100% positive patient identification and minimal discomfort.
- Identify and track specimens coming into the lab, organize and package samples for transport, and retrieve requested samples.
- Organize, assess, schedule and dispatch phlebotomy requests to minimize patient venipunctures.
- Process incoming specimens rapidly, support turnaround times, and perform all functions with high accuracy and speed.
- Secure specimens for shipping, preventing leakage or loss.
- Identify deviations from procedures, report to supervisor, investigate incidents, and discuss resolutions.
- Provide patient reports to healthcare providers while observing HIPAA principles.
- Review computer reports to ensure tests are in progress, follow up incomplete orders, and communicate professionally.
- Manage own time with little supervision to accomplish duties efficiently.
- Apply knowledge of culture media types, inoculation techniques, and temperature/ incubation requirements for culture specimens.
- Experience in phlebotomy and/or clinical lab preferred.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Excellent customer service skills, basic computer skills, and multitasking ability required; on‑the‑job training provided.
