The Comptroller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and human resources functions of the charter middle school. This includes budgeting, accounting, reporting, compliance, and staff HR administration. The Comptroller ensures the school operates efficiently and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and school policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating budgets in coordination with school leadership.
  • Accurate and timely accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and oversee annual audits.
  • Assist with grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard school assets.

Human Resources Management:

  • Administer payroll and employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies.
  • Maintain employee records in compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and school HR policies.
  • Assist school leadership with performance management and employee relations.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff and benefits providers.
  • Manage employee handbooks, HR policies, and personnel documentation.

Operations & Compliance:

  • Ensure proper documentation and compliance for state and federal education grants.
  • Collaborate with school leadership on strategic planning and operational decisions.
  • Assist in procurement and vendor contract management.
  • Support risk management and insurance processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or Finance (Master’s preferred)
  • CPA is a plus.
  • 3–5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in a school or nonprofit setting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, payroll, and HR laws.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Quick Books) and HR/payroll systems.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of public charter education.

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment within a school setting.
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for school events or reporting deadlines.
  • May involve limited lifting or physical activity related to office management.
