This part‑time position requires a commitment of 10 hours per week, with shifts scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM.
Purpose of ClassificationThe purpose of this classification is to ensure the safety and welfare of children when crossing roadways at designated school crossing sites.
ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Stops roadway traffic at a designated school crossing site for the purpose of providing safe crossing for school children.
- Maintains awareness of safety conditions at school crossing site for the purpose of ensuring safety and welfare of school children at all times.
- Directs both children and parents in safe crossing.
- Communicates with police personnel for the purpose of reporting any current or potential problem areas or concerns.
- Communicates with school personnel for the purpose of acquiring school related information, and/or providing information concerning issues with students/parents at school crossing site.

- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Supplemented by any previous experience demonstrating with a level of maturity and judgment to provide safe roadway crossing for school age children
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Good Physical condition, including sight, hearing, and the ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles;
- Ability to control a stop paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement;
- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously;
- Ability to stand for a minimum of one hour uninterrupted while at an assigned crossing.

Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12‑20 pounds).
