This paraprofessional work provides excellent customer service, involves some supervisory tasks, and may serve as a person in charge of a unit or library facility. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for performance. This position can be scheduled during any daytime, evening, or weekend library hours.
This posting will close after the receipt of the first 25 qualified applicants or 2 weeks, whichever comes first.
- Provides excellent customer service to library users in person, on the phone, or online.
- Performs circulation functions at service desks, including financial transactions.
- Executes designated opening and closing procedures within the unit or facility.
- Prepares visually pleasing displays/signage highlighting library materials or programs.
- Assists library users with electronic devices, library databases and digital resources, general technology questions, and software, including Microsoft Office products and Internet browsers.
- Troubleshoots and corrects minor problems with office machines, such as copiers, printers, and scanners.
- May assist with scheduling or supervision of a unit or facility.
- Assists with physical and digital collection maintenance, including uploading records, selecting, processing, and weeding materials, and preserving local historical documents.
- Plans and conducts age-appropriate programs for children and adults.
- Prepares and teaches classes on topics such as technology.
- Provides reader advisory assistance to library customers.
- Conducts impromptu public speaking sessions with small groups within the library to discuss available services.
- Addresses problem behaviors on the general service floor and works through situations respectfully and professionally.
- May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours, including nights and weekends, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
- May count revenue and prepare financial reports.
- Compiles and submits statistical reports monthly.
- Uses social media to inform users about library services.
- Represents the library at professional conferences, meetings, workshops, and outreach events.
- May be asked to assist with light custodial tasks.
- Performs related work as required.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- One year of experience in a library setting, office, or customer service environment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Knowledge of both print and digital resources to assist customers with their questions.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in public libraries.
- Proficient in using a computer, including keyboard skills.
- Proficient in using electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, iPads, eReaders, etc.
- Experience navigating the internet to find information.
- Ability to interact with library users courteously, professionally, and efficiently.
- Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
- Ability to address library users in person when behaviors become a problem.
- Ability to interpret, communicate, and facilitate information, goals, concerns, directives, etc., to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain an organized workspace.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff members and others in the library at the local, regional, and state levels.
- Ability to address the public directly when behavior issues arise and contact appropriate emergency personnel.
- The job requires sedentary work that involves walking and standing sometimes, exerting up to 20 pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operations.
- The job has no significant exposure to environmental hazards.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
