The Napa County Probation Department is recruiting for an on-call float pool position at Juvenile Hall. This recruitment aims to fill thirteen (13) Extra Help vacancies, which may be filled at the Juvenile Hall Counselor I or II level, depending on qualifications. Under California Code of Regulations Title 15, gender is a bona fide occupational qualification for this position.

Extra Help positions are temporary, with schedules up to 29 hours per week (up to 1,000 hours annually) and limited benefits. These employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities available to regular staff.

About the Position & Department:

Juvenile Hall Counselors supervise, care for, and custody youth detained in Juvenile Hall, and assist with counseling referred juveniles. The Napa County Probation Department enforces court orders and aims to inspire positive change, transform lives, and promote community safety. It also manages the County’s Juvenile Hall, providing custody, medical care, and guidance in various programs.

Pay & Benefits:

Note: There is a 3% COLA increase effective 7/01/2025 for this classification.

Position Requirements:

• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications vary by level:

• Experience:
  
  None required.
• Education:
  
  Equivalent to two years of college in psychology, sociology, criminology, social welfare, or a related field. Up to one year of relevant supervision or care experience can substitute for one year of college.
• License:
  Valid California Driver's License; ability to obtain first aid and CPR certificates within one year.

• Experience:
  
  One year as a Juvenile Hall Counselor; a bachelor's degree in a related field can substitute for up to six months of experience.
• Education:
  
  Same as above.
• License:
  Same as above.

All required licenses and certifications must be maintained in good standing during employment.

The Recruitment Process:

• The process includes application review, in-person information session, personal history statement, physical agility test, written exam, and panel interview.

The physical agility test includes tasks such as lifting and dragging a dummy, maneuvering through a zigzag course, and other physical exercises.
