Collection Development Librarian

The Collection Development Librarian performs selection, deselection, and assessment of the libraries’ collections and users’ needs in assigned areas and within budget. Reports to and works with the Collection Services Supervisor in conjunction with Technical Services to respond to the needs of the public. Work is performed independently under general supervision, with execution of sound judgment related to use of taxpayer dollars.

  • The Collection Development Librarian builds a collection which reflects the diversity of Napa County in accordance with the Collection Development Policy.
  • Analyzes community and library data to build and manage a solid collection of current library materials from a variety of sources including journals, media, publishers, and distributors.
  • Oversees collection maintenance of assigned collections in collaboration with library staff. The position requires regular visits to library branches for hands‑on work with collections.
  • Monitors collection budgets and tracks collection usage; prepares reports to analyze collection effectiveness and tracks the outcomes of collection‑based strategic goals.
  • Coordinates with cataloging, acquisition, and technical services staff on procedures and collection updates.
  • Is knowledgeable of library trends, developments and new technology and administrates grants and other special projects accordingly.
  • Collaborates with staff at all levels to ensure that collections, programming and displays reflect the needs of patrons, incorporating internal and external feedback.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full‑time vacancy. The list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill current and future full‑time, part‑time, limited‑term, and extra help vacancies for up to one year.

  • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/1/2026

POSITIION REQUIREMENTS

Experience and

Education:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • LIBRARIAN I ($ 42.09 - $ 50.06/hour )
  • Experience:

    None required
  • Education:

    Possession of a graduate degree in library science issued by a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
  • LIBRARIAN II ($ 45.49 - $ 54.36/hour )
  • Experience:

    One year of experience in professional library work.
  • Education:

    None Required

License or Certificate*: Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e., active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

Special Qualifications

Persons employed in this class must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
