Job Title
Lieutenant – Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (Eddie Warrior Correctional Center)
Compensation$53,268.80 per year
Basic PurposePositions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the coordination, supervision, and direction of a correctional security program, maintaining security, control and custody of inmates, complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and facilitating the successful operation of a state adult correctional facility.
Responsibilities- Conduct shift briefings, supervise correctional officers, and coordinate shift coverage.
- Provide a leadership role to subordinate officers; serve as a positive role model and provide information to the chief of security.
- Complete performance reviews for subordinates and set job expectations for officers; administer progressive discipline, monitor and approve officers’ time and clear exceptions.
- Maintain a high degree of knowledge of duties required for assigned posts, offender programs, logs, policies and procedures; implement and perform those duties with minimal supervision.
- Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities.
- Maintain security of an assigned area or post, respond to emergencies and adapt to any situation.
- Provide security and supervision over inmate work crews.
- Escort inmates to work sites.
- Inventory and control all equipment, weapons, tools, caustics and keys.
- Review safety and security for all areas.
- Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift.
- Observe activities and movements of inmates.
- Manage inmate conduct, work and discipline.
- Maintain order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods.
- Inspect living areas, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; make reports on incidents.
- Operate manually or electronically controlled security equipment, maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public.
- Conduct inmate counts.
- Perform searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband.
- Enforce institutional rules and regulations.
- Maintain security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing and/or walking.
- Conduct sanitation and security inspections of all areas within assigned posts and take appropriate steps to correct deficiencies.
- Prepare written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status, and movement.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and
Competencies:
supervisory methods and techniques; staffing patterns and scheduling; discipline methods for inmates under restraint; psychology of inmate behavior; firearms use and care; restraint methods; fundamentals of English usage; basic math; and report writing techniques. Ability to establish effective working relationships, follow oral and written instructions, gather and organize facts, write clear reports, quickly evaluate situations, act quickly in emergencies, communicate security techniques, maintain firearms proficiency, and manage conflict resolution.
Education and Experience: Three years of correctional officer or security work for a government or private corrections agency plus statutory requirements of 57 O.S. §510: minimum age 20; either 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university or a high school diploma/GED plus completion of a Department‑approved training course within the first six months.
Special Requirements- Good moral character.
- Completion of an adequate training program for correctional officers and guards before duty alone.
- Physical fitness in keeping with the conditions of the job, maintained annually.
- Valid driver’s license at appointment time for necessary travel.
- Drug testing.
- Willingness and ability to work any assigned shift or day of the week.
- Designation as a peace officer may require additional training and screening per the Department of Corrections.
- Eligibility restrictions for peace officers concerning felony convictions, domestic violence, and other statutory disqualifications.
- Some positions are safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. §427.8.
