Role Summary
The Surgical Technician I will engage in surgical support services such as animal preparation, note taking, anesthesia monitoring, study setup, surgical record review, and facilitating surgical staff in completing studies in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
Role Responsibilities- Assist with operation maintenance of surgical equipment.
- Stocking standard surgical supplies.
- Sterilization and preparation of surgical suites, equipment, and tools.
- Surgical sanitation and aseptic technique with surgical site preparation.
- Drug calculation and administration including eye drops, topical, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and catheter placement.
- Use of anesthesia machines including anesthesia monitoring, assessment of depth, patient monitoring, and vital sign monitoring.
- Intubation/extubation, induction of anesthesia, ventilation.
- Paper and electronic data collection, including detailed observations, note-taking, and data review.
- Ability to handle common laboratory species.
- Assisting with or performing humane euthanasia procedures as necessary.
- Waste management including proper disposal of biohazard materials and chemicals.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- Bachelor’s degree in animal or life sciences with a minimum of 6 months experience preferred.
- SRA or ALAT certification preferred. Required to begin the application process for SRA certification within 2 years of hire.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.

- This role will spend approximately 15% of time in an office setting and 85% of time in the laboratory. There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of, and/or exposure to, animal tissues and zoonotic organisms.
- Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.
- Physical activity includes lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing, and ascending ladders without restriction.
- Ability to spend most of the day standing or walking.
- Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including evenings, weekends, and extended shifts with short notice.
