Muskegon Community College is a center for lifelong learning that helps people attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs. The college has a strong focus on student success, offers 18 athletic teams, and serves an enrollment of approximately 2,300 full-time-equivalent students and 5,100 unduplicated headcount. The college operates the Sturrus Technology Center and Fab Lab in downtown Muskegon and extension centers in Ottawa and Newaygo Counties.

Position Type: Part-Time
General DescriptionAssumes responsibility for all aspects of the program, plans short- and long-term objectives, demonstrates technical expertise in the basics of volleyball, teaches fundamentals and advanced skills and strategies to student-athletes, recruits players, supervises practice sessions, scouts opponents, provides guidance and mentoring to student-athletes, and assists with monitoring academic progress. Responsible for coaching, practice, conditioning, travel arrangements, and recruitment. Primary focus is on student-athletes’ academic success and development.

- High School Diploma Required;
Bachelor’s Degree Preferred - Two years minimum coaching experience
- Ability to recruit talented student athletes
- College level teaching and coaching skills
- Ability to relate to people of all ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds
- Strong knowledge and love of the sport; knowledge of sport training and strategies
- Professional image under pressure; strong interpersonal skills; ability to build rapport with diverse students
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and external contacts
- Discretion, confidentiality, dependability, and punctuality
- Ability to stay calm in a fast-paced environment; high integrity and dedication to MCC’s mission
- Effective problem-solving, oral and written communication skills
- Flexible scheduling for evening and weekend work
- Commitment to student recruitment, retention, success, and assessment of learning; use of traditional and non-traditional instructional delivery methods
- Teach college-level skills and knowledge to student-athletes, including verbal instruction and demonstration
- Manage and reconcile expenses within the team budget
- Provide leadership and mentoring to assistant coaches
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; pass background check to drive college vehicles
- Support the Muskegon Community College Intercollegiate Program across sports
- Provide moral support, ensure safety and well-being of student-athletes
- Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs; prolonged standing/walking/sitting; computer/phone use
- Motivate students and team with integrity, ethics, and dedication
- Effective communication with students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining confidentiality
- Maintain compliance with NJCAA Sportsmanship Policy
- All other duties as assigned
