Job Description

Provides technical support for the multiple disciplines in Anatomic Pathology by maintaining maximum efficiency and uninterrupted workflow of the laboratory. The Pathology Technician Level I may perform tissue gross examination or dissection in accordance with educational requirements outlined by CAP.

Central Lab – Intermountain Health has an extensive network of lab centers and draw stations across the areas we serve. Our lab specialists provide fast, accurate, and reliable test results, so you and your doctor can begin discussing a care plan.

Essential Functions
  • Performs tissue gross examination or dissection in accordance with educational requirements outlined by CAP and site‑specific competencies.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and may dictate comprehensive specimen descriptions; caregivers may handle and dispose of hazardous materials such as formalin.
  • Pathology Technician I maintains accurate identification of specimens throughout the laboratory process and is responsible for recognizing and resolving accessioning and billing errors.
  • Path Tech I may actively participate in developing and revising laboratory procedures and take on training roles specific to assigned job skills, and may perform other duties as assigned by site.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or 60 semester hours or equivalent (as verified by Quality Assurance Manager or Director), including 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 of biology, and 12 of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Pathology or Histology experience
Physical Requirements
  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication and rapid understanding of spoken information, alarms, and needs, especially during emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision, including frequent computer use and typing for documentation.
  • Expected to lift, transfer, and carry supplies and equipment up to and including heavy items; bend, lift, and carry additional items.
  • Need to walk and assist in transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing and pulling gurneys and portable equipment.
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • For driving roles:
    Expected to drive a vehicle, requiring sitting, seeing, reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
