Job Summary /Basic Function

The Assistant Director of Executive Air Transportation/Chief Pilot is responsible for directing all operational aspects of MTSU Executive Air Transportation services to support the transportation needs of the University. Reporting to the Director of Aerospace – Airport Operations, this position ensures strict compliance with regulatory requirements and safety standards, manages flight operations, and leads flight crew members to include preparation of annual performance evaluations.

Oversees executive air transportation aircraft to include piloting, crew scheduling, route planning, and arranging/overseeing trip details and passenger needs. Administers the Executive Air Transportation budget and billing. Arranges for completion of all scheduled/unscheduled aircraft maintenance. Maintains all required FAA and Departmental personnel, training, aircraft, and other records. Promotes the availability of air transportation services to the University community.

Additionally, this role is actively engaged in the MTSU Professional Pilot training program. In close coordination with Flight Training Management, duties include developing and administering practicum experiences in air carrier operations, high-performance aircraft flight labs, and implementing/routinely revising ground and flight training curricula, training materials, and methods/objectives. Teaches aerospace coursework, preparing students to achieve required proficiency. Actively participates in programs promoting recruitment and retention efforts within the MTSU Professional Pilot concentration and supporting activities related to the department’s mission and safety program.

Other duties, as assigned. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, operational expertise, a commitment to safety and customer service, and a passion for education.

Required Education

Undergraduate degree in professional pilot, aerospace, or aviation is required. A graduate degree in aerospace, aviation, education, or related field is preferred.

An undergraduate degree in a non-aviation field with at least 10 years of experience as a pilot in business, corporate, airline, charter, or military flight operations may be considered.

Required Related Experience

A combination of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as:

  • A pilot in business, corporate, charter, airline, or military flight operations
  • Flight instructor in Part 61, 141, or 142 training environment

Minimum logged flight hours:

  • PIC – 3,000 hours
  • Multiengine Total: 750 hours
  • Multiengine Turbine: 300 hours
  • High-Altitude Endorsement
  • High-Performance Endorsement
Required License/Registration/Certification Desirable Related Experience

Three (3) years of experience acting as PIC in Part 91/135 business, corporate, charter, or military aviation, or Part 121 airline environment.

Desirable flight hours:

  • Multiengine Total: 1,000 hrs
  • Multiengine Turbine: 400 hrs in aircraft used by MTSU for Executive Transportation
  • Minimum 50 hrs dual given in Cirrus SR-22T

Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a Part 141 flight training environment, with at least one (1) year as Chief Flight Instructor (FAR 141.35) or Assistant Chief Flight Instructor (FAR 141.36).

Two (2) years teaching collegiate aerospace ground school courses.
