PURPOSE

This Science Communication Assistant is an Ameri Corps position. The Science Communication SIP participant will use recent advances in technology, including web‑based tools and services, to share knowledge with the public and support the National Park Service mission of preserving natural and cultural resources for education and inspiration.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Science Communication SIP participant will work closely with Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Cultural Resources staff as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing science communication and educational tools across media to enhance visitor experiences.
  • Supporting NRM staff through data collection and analysis related to invasive species management, including recording percent cover, treatment success, and performing literature reviews on best management practices.
  • Educating the public on management strategies such as prescribed fire, herbicide treatments, and bush hogging, and creating GIS maps and data records to support these activities.
  • Assisting with photography and video of management operations, landscape conditions, and park resources for use on the park website and social media.
  • Creating web pages, exhibits, interpretive publications, and social media posts; preparing and presenting at least one onsite or outreach interpretive program.
DELIVERABLES

Educational materials in digital and print formats about scientific studies, invasive species, and management strategies; updated webpage content; videos and photographs; social media posts and products.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; if not yet obtained, must plan to obtain it prior to completing the education award.
  • Ready to complete a National Service Criminal History Check and a government security background check before starting.
  • Available to participate for the entire 26 weeks.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong writing and communication skills; motivated and able to complete projects independently and as part of a team; proficient in Microsoft Office; experience developing science communication products; GIS experience; digital publishing, photography, and video production experience.

POSITION SETTING

Stones River National Battlefield is a 700‑acre park located near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Projects are primarily office‑based with occasional fieldwork requiring standing, hiking, and exposure to outdoor conditions.

VEHICLE AND DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle.
  • A personal vehicle is recommended.
HOUSING

Park housing is provided at no cost. Furnished co‑ed room in a three‑bedroom house with common areas. Housing includes cable and Wi‑Fi.
