Purpose and Scope
The Workforce Essentials Adult Education program supports adult learners in achieving the high school equivalency diploma, improving foundational or technical skills, or gaining command of the English language and advancing personal growth. The instructor collaborates with the AE County Program Coordinator and the AE Assistant Program Director to ensure an educational atmosphere where students fulfill their potential. Student options include earning a high school diploma, and/or improving basic skills in math, language, science, social studies, and reading to show a level gain in the six levels as defined by the National Reporting System (NRS).
Students may also receive training in employability skills or job‑specific training in a workforce readiness program, workforce transition program or a post‑secondary preparation pathway.
- Program Classroom Management and Compliance
- Maintain compliance with Tennessee Adult Education policies and performance standards.
- Keep accurate records of attendance and provide records to student coordinator.
- Follow curriculum and assessment protocols to foster student progress through established learning levels. Be aware of federal and state time limits for data entry and testing and your role in each.
- Monitor student attendance tracking and re‑engagement processes. Call and/or email students who miss class. Reach out in a timely manner and document outreach.
- Understand instructor performance goals and county goals for retention, gains, and graduation.
- Attend professional development opportunities provided for staff as requested. If unable to attend, follow up with supervisor to request a recording or notes of content covered.
- Establish effective system for noting student assessment and placement, and skills gaps to determine individualized instruction.
- Work in tandem with student coordinator to remain aware of student hours and provide test taking strategies as post‑testing timeframe approaches.
- Effectively plans, organizes, instructs, and evaluates student work. Be knowledgeable about all curriculum changes and policies as set forth by the division of Adult Education (DAE).
- Provides a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences through appropriate implementation and evaluation of classroom instructional activities.
- Follow curriculum and assessment protocols to foster student progress through established learning levels.
- Conducts and/or partners with staff that performs Adult Education orientation and testing. Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS), Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and Official Practice Tests (OPT) will be utilized.
- Collaborate with other instructors as needed for curriculum implementation, lesson planning, and distance education.
- Support local AE partnerships to expand educational access and support workforce needs if opportunities arise. Refer partnership ideas to the County Coordinator.
- Represent the local AE program in the local community as an ambassador for adult education by being knowledgeable about the intake and orientation process, as well as the general times all classes are available so you can refer those interested in joining a class.
- Maintain general knowledge about Workforce Essentials and work‑based programs to be able to answer general questions about Workforce Development Initiatives (WDIs) including IETs, pre‑apprenticeship programs, apprenticeships, ESL classes, etc. Refer any inquiries to the County Coordinator, Assistant Program Director, or Program Director.
- Support students by attending graduation ceremonies to celebrate if available.
- Supervise data management, ensuring accurate and timely student information reporting.
- Regularly review data to guide program adjustments and meet state‑set performance goals.
- Provide timely reports as requested to stakeholders.
- Bachelors degree (required); teaching experience and administrative licensing preferred.
