The Calm Coach serves as a member of the school-based student support team and manages the Student Calm Center, a space designated to support the emotional regulation and wellness of students. The Calm Coach, in conjunction with the school counselor, provides short-term trauma-responsive care to help students manage intense emotions and prevent crisis. The goal of the Calm Coach is to help students de-escalate, develop skills to recognize and manage their emotions, and increase success in the learning environment.

Qualifications

Required: A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in an education related field is preferred. A minimum of 2 years' experience working with children is required. Experience working with children who demonstrate emotional or behavioral challenges is preferred. Experience working within a school setting is preferred.

Other Qualifications

Demonstrate empathy for and understanding of the dynamics of families with students with behavioral and emotional issues. Experience collaborating with parents, school, and community professionals. Participate in a coaching process for continuous quality improvement that includes highlighting program successes and responding effectively to corrective feedback. Respect and protect the confidentiality rights of parents and children.

Physical Demands

Must be able to see, hear and move quickly enough to provide for the safety and instructional needs of the children. Must be able to articulate clearly. Must be physically active and interactive throughout the school day (i.e., be able to stand for extended periods of time, stoop, bend, do light lifting, push, pull, step, and have good finger dexterity). Must have emotional coping skills appropriate for the management of student behavior.

Must tolerate environmental smells and substances commonly associated with children and educational institutions. The person in this position may be exposed to bodily fluids and there need to use universal precautions.

Essential Job Functions

The primary role of the Calm Coach is to work directly with students to provide brief emotional and behavioral care that supports
1) stress reduction and emotional regulation;
2) connection and relationship building;
3) accountability action when necessary; and
4) successful re-integration into the learning environment.

Specific job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with school administration and school counselors to plan and conduct re-entry meetings for students returning from short-term or extended absences from the learning environment.
  • Collaborate with school administration, school counselors, and classroom teachers to support successful re-entry and re-integration in the regular classroom setting.
  • Collaborate with the school-based student support team, specifically school counselors, to identify and create opportunities to support emotional wellness across Tiers I (teach skills to students in the classroom setting), II (participate in Check-in/Check-out, Mentoring program), and III (help support students with behavior intervention plans).
  • Document and monitor activities of students in the Student Calm Center and gather required data regarding Student Calm Center services and programming.
  • Participate in professional development activities that inform Student Calm Center practices that include ACEs, Trauma-Informed School practices, De-escalation, Restorative Practices, Mindfulness, Social Emotional Learning, Behavior Supports, and other related learning opportunities.
  • Participate in school-based RTI2-B team meetings to review data, monitor student progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Receive referrals from students and school staff and deliver Student Calm Center services to individual students.
  • Staff Relationship

    Reports directly to the school administrator and the Coordinator of Behavior Support.

    Terms of Employment

    Ten (10) months. Salary and benefits set annually. Exempt.
