CREDENTIALS
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).
- An associate degree or higher preferred
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with facilitating training and professional development is preferred.
- Must be a continuous learner who is creative, innovative, and able to build highly effective teams focused on student learning.
- Must be a leader who is dedicated to the development of the whole child, open communication, and collaboration.
- Must be able to follow and give directions, make decisions, analyze issues, problem solve, and create action plans.
- Must be able to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
- Must be punctual and regular in attendance.
- Must comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect the confidentiality rights of parents, children, and other sensitive information.
- Must follow directions.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must model appropriate grammar usage. Must support safety and good self-esteem in children.
- Must represent the school and district well within the community.
- Must work cooperatively with adults and children.
Must have and maintain physical, sensory, emotional, and mental abilities necessary for effective communication in all mediums. Must have good working memory skills; be able to organize thoughts and activities, do basic mathematical computations; articulate clearly. Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends, participate in occasional overnight travel, and provide own transportation during performing duties. Must be emotionally mature and able to appropriately handle stress.
Must tolerate environmental smells and substances commonly associated with children and educational institutions.
Under the direct supervision of the Federal Programs Director, the Student in Transition Liaison will provide services designed to eliminate barriers and support the enrollment, attendance, and academic success of homeless children and youth and those in foster care in Murfreesboro City Schools. This person s primary work location will be at a school site(s) while frequently reporting to the central office.
The role will help ensure enrollment barriers are removed from MKV students throughout the district.
- Assist families and the Transportation Department with transportation services, including to the school of origin and accessing services.
- Maintain mileage logs, contracts, and attendance for parent reimbursement.
- Send out of zone transportation forms to transportation.
- Follow up with transportation request.
- Outsource transportation service.
- Attend and host professional development and training and workshops, as needed.
- Training is on My benefits channel. School staff also need in-person training.
- Collaborate and support MCS personnel to ensure that students enroll in and have full and equal opportunity to succeed in Murfreesboro City Schools, including, but not limited to, academic, non-academic, and attendance. For example:
- Academics:
Monitor report cards, progress reports and remediation plans. Review student progress reports and refer to social workers for areas of concern. - Nonacademic:
Help remove barriers for students so they can participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities. - Attendance:
Collaborate with weekly social workers about students with potential attendance/academic issues - Monitor attendance and academic information for MKV student
- Academics:
- Collaborate and support Social Workers, School Counselors, and other school personnel to identify students who qualify as homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act of 2002.
- Maintain up to date files and requests.
- Review school level affidavits and identify students who may be mis-identified.
- Work with attendance staff to ensure enrollment documentation is accurate.
- Collaborate with schools and community agencies to help support the non-academic needs of students (basic clothing, housing, etc.).
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community agencies for MKV resources.
- Facilitate data sharing with child welfare agencies, with FERPA and privacy.

- Ensure interdistrict transportation agreements are in place with neighboring districts.
- Communicate with other districts and school organizations for proper record transfer.
- Maintain appropriate travel logs necessary to serve homeless.
- Make decisions and take actions based on what is best for the student, but also consider the impact on staff, school, district, families, and community.
