Overview

Ball State University Facilities Planning and Management has an opportunity to work on the beautiful campus. This opportunity comes with excellent pay. The rate for this position is $28.00 per hour. The ideal candidate will be flexible, possess great service skills with a willingness to learn, and this is an on campus opportunity. Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, perform skilled mechanical maintenance and service duties on automobiles and other related vehicles and equipment and/or grounds and construction equipment, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate regulations and codes following proper procedures and techniques.
  • Repair automobiles, buses, trucks, landscape and agricultural equipment, stationary generators, and related equipment. Inspect, diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines used throughout the university system. Disassemble, repair, and/or overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials and all subcomponents. Demonstrate the ability to rebuild component parts and assemblies using accepted practices and special tools. Must be able to safely use acetylene and electric welders to facilitate repairs or modifications.

    Must be able to test drive all University vehicles. Must be able to learn and demonstrate mastery of CFA Win and Shop Floor software recordkeeping systems.
  • Perform physical tasks as specified in the duty requirements, including the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, grasp, and exert various levels of force; be able to work in environments with noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, and other hazards; read and comprehend safety, hazardous materials, and University policies and procedures; and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Troubleshoot ignition, electrical systems, fuel delivery and computer controlled operational systems. Repair and service air conditioning, heating, and engine-cooling systems. Use test equipment and wiring charts to diagnose and repair complex automotive, truck, and bus wiring. Understand loading and flow of electricity to diagnose and repair items without wiring charts or manuals. Be computer literate to utilize software programs to diagnose and repair electrical, emission and electronic controls on automobiles, trucks, and buses.
  • Make wheel alignments and repair braking systems in light, medium, and heavy-duty configurations. Use alignment machines and techniques to perform 2- and 4-wheel alignments. Repair vehicle braking systems including hydraulic brakes and air brakes.
  • Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers. Follow provided instructions to install components and may modify or fabricate wiring harnesses or hose bundles as needed.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, and tune-ups. Update odometer and hour meter records and ensure maintenance checks cover fluids, belts, hoses, tire condition, steering, and braking systems.
  • Perform paint and body repairs, assess damage, restore panels, and complete estimates of damage for a varied pool of equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. If required, possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Transport Endorsement or obtain such licensing within a reasonable time after hire as determined by Ball State University.

  • Qualifications
    • Minimum Education:
      • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
    • Minimum Experience:
      • Successful completion of an Automotive Mechanic apprenticeship program as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or an equivalent combination or education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
