Role Overview We are looking for a skilled and analytical Medical Coder to manage coding operations for Emergency Department services. This professional will ensure the precise translation of medical documentation into standard classification systems, directly impacting revenue cycle integrity and compliance. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of Emergency Medicine coding guidelines, including Medical Decision Making (MDM) logic and E/M leveling.
Key Responsibilities Coding & Documentation Review
Analyze medical records to accurately abstract and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for a high volume of Emergency Department visits, procedures, and diagnoses.
Utilize Medical Decision Making (MDM) table guidelines to correctly determine Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels based on the complexity of the patient encounter.
Review documentation to ensure it supports the medical necessity of services rendered and aligns with payer-specific policies.
Compliance & Accuracy
Maintain strict adherence to federal and state regulations, CMS guidelines, and AMA CPT updates.
Apply National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits to identify and resolve unbundling or modifier errors.
Perform regular self-audits and participate in peer reviews to identify coding patterns, ensuring consistent quality and reduced denial rates.
Collaboration & Provider Support
Serve as a technical resource for physicians and clinical staff regarding documentation best practices.
Provide clear, constructive feedback on documentation gaps related to MDM components (number of diagnoses, data analyzed, and risk assessments).
Work collaboratively to resolve coding discrepancies and queries efficiently.
Qualifications Education & Certification
High School Diploma or GED required;
Associate's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
Required Certification: Must hold active certification from AAPC or AHIMA (e.g., CPC, COC, CCS, RHIT).
Preferred: Certified Emergency Department Coder (CEDC) credential.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of professional medical coding experience.
Demonstrated proficiency in Emergency Department (ED) coding and E/M leveling is highly preferred.
Preferred Skills Technical Agility: Proficiency with major EHR platforms and encoding software.
Analytical Problem-Solving: Ability to navigate complex clinical scenarios and payer guidelines independently.
Communication: Strong ability to articulate coding guidelines to non-coding clinical staff clearly and professionally.
Adaptability: Commitment to staying current with evolving coding regulations and industry changes.
