Overview

The Support Services Technician performs various clerical and other support duties related to the Police Department.

Responsibilities
  • Performs various clerical and secretarial skills related to the Police Department and maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality, as required.
  • Performs office procedures including record checks; correspondence; merges, processes and enters data from collisions, police reports and incidents into the records management system.
  • Operates and monitors office equipment including computer terminals, typewriters, adding machines, copier, shredder, recorders, postage meter and multi‑line telephone system, police radio console, data bank, calculator, and telephone equipment.
  • Receives in‑person counter inquiries and numerous telephone inquiries on the multi‑line telephone system; answers questions of general and technical nature and refers individuals to in‑house staff and appropriate offices/agencies as needed; assists citizens with requests for routine police services, including dog licenses, clearance letters, filing fees and restitution payments; receives, and responds to, in‑person and telephone inquiries of a general and technical nature (with relation to records and evidence functions).
  • Attends meetings and training to keep current on changing laws, procedures, certifications and other necessary material.
  • Monitors and maintains security measures necessary to the assignment.
  • Tallies traffic and criminal citations and records for departmental use; prepares cases for court docket; and fingerprints citizens and employees.
  • Defuses and provides appropriate assistance or information to frequently irate, combative or intoxicated citizens.
  • Maintains communications with officers and provides information and data when requested.
  • Appears in court to present evidence and testifies against people accused of crimes.
  • Collects and accounts for monies including issuing receipts; assists Police Office Supervisor with deposits.
  • Obtains and maintains Access certification at appropriate level, pursuant to regulations.
  • Processes gun purchases and concealed pistol license applications pursuant to federal and state law and established department policy.
  • Assists with maintenance and destruction of all police records per established retention schedules and department policy.
  • Processes all incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Responds to requests for police records from the general public. Provides information in accordance with department policies and public disclosure and privacy act requirements.
  • Composes various police reports, including follow‑ups, found property and additional narratives, as needed.
  • Accepts and handles evidence and found property, including those items that are of a hazardous nature (e.g., body fluids and blood) or are considered potentially dangerous (e.g., handguns and knives); secures property room and maintains evidence logs and a legal chain of custody in accordance with state law, department policy and strict procedures. Sends evidence items to the lab as needed for analysis.
  • Assists with inventory control measures in the property room; releases or assists in disposal of property in accordance with department policy and applicable laws.
  • Coordinates with various prosecutors’ offices to provide criminal citations, case reports, follow‑up information and all electronic media.
  • Supports other divisions by maintaining communications and providing information and data when requested.
  • Collects appropriate fees and issues receipts.
  • Transitions to performing duties outside normal scope during periods of emergency (EOC operation assistance).
  • Uses industry‑specific software proficiently, including WACIC, NCIC, ACCESS, RMS, CAD, Axon, GovQA, JABS, Justice Viewer, Novoa Global, Passport, Powertime, PMI, Secure Access, SharePoint for the City and County Prosecutor.
  • Acts as agent for Traffic Violations Bureau, including:
    • Processing infraction tickets.
    • Acceptance of payment and issuance of receipts.
    • Liaison with courts in relation to all tickets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
