In this role, you will serve as the architect of the forward facing Autonomous Driving System safety case, guiding how safety is defined, justified, measured, and defended across onboard and cloud based software systems. A significant portion of the system incorporates AI driven components, making this a uniquely challenging and high impact opportunity.

Your Mission

As the Autonomous Driving System Safety Lead within Systems Engineering, you will take ownership of the safety argumentation framework that supports driverless deployment  will work across autonomy software, robotics, infrastructure, data platforms, operations, validation, and legal teams to ensure that safety claims are technically sound, evidence based, and systematically defended.

You will translate complex system behavior into clear, structured claims. You will challenge assumptions, uncover risk, and close gaps before they surface in deployment. Your work will directly influence how autonomous systems operate safely without a human driver.

What You Will Do
  • Own the Safety Case:
    Develop and author structured safety claims for onboard and offboard autonomous driving software, including AI heavy subsystems.
  • Decompose and Orchestrate Claims:
    Break high level safety assertions into atomic claims, assign ownership across cross functional teams, and maintain quality and consistency throughout.
  • Stress Test the Argument:
    Generate counter arguments and structured challenges to validate robustness. Ensure all concerns are addressed or mitigated.
  • Evaluate Evidence:
    Partner closely with verification and validation teams to assess testing results, simulation outputs, and field data as supporting evidence.
  • Track Safety Performance:
    Design and manage processes that monitor safety indicators across systems engineering and evaluation teams, particularly for fully driverless Level 4 operations.
  • Surface and Mitigate Risk:
    Escalate technical gaps, architectural risks, validation shortfalls, and AI design limitations to senior leadership with clear mitigation strategies.
  • Advance Safety Practices:
    Identify and apply relevant technical standards and industry best practices to strengthen the safety case.

This role begins as a senior individual contributor position, with a clear path toward building and leading a dedicated safety engineering team as technical milestones are achieved.

What You Bring
  • At least five years of technical experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or related domains, including three or more years focused on robotics software.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees are welcome.
  • Strong command of systems engineering principles including requirements development, verification, validation, and system level integration.
  • Experience with in safety critical industries such as automotive, aviation, aerospace, medical devices, or complex robotic platforms.
  • Hands on experience with ISO 21448 and familiarity with ISO 8800.
  • Deep understanding of how complex robotic systems function in real world environments.
  • Exceptional analytical thinking, written communication, and cross functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting or deploying Level 4 autonomous vehicle systems.
  • Demonstrated success writing safety claims and requirements for SAE Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 systems.
  • Background in naturalistic driving data analysis and human performance benchmarking.
  • Experience using simulation environments for autonomous vehicle verification and validation.
  • Experience leading or strategically guiding a small technical team.
